There are benefits in playing The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom before Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment.

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom was released in 2023, and it was a stellar experience. The story follows Link mustering the strength to defeat Lord Ganondorf after his long slumber during the Imprisoning War. The Zonai allied with the people of Hyrule to vanquish this great evil in the past.
While Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a prequel to the events of Tears of the Kingdom, we recommend playing it first. The Imprisoning War plays an important part in the previous installment, and experiencing it firsthand with Princess Zelda and her allies would fill in the gaps.
Playing The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Is a Must Before Age of Imprisonment

In Tears of the Kingdom, Ganondorf is back and has no intention of leaving his work unfinished. Link, now with a wounded arm, was imbued with power by King Rauru of the Zonai to fight this ancient evil. Together with the descendants of the Sages, Link takes the fight to Ganondorf and seemingly reenacts the last stand of ancient Hyrule.
While Link is in the present, Princess Zelda goes to the past. This conflict was referenced heavily in Tears of the Kingdom, and playing that game first would amplify this experience. Rather than learning about the Imprisoning War through flashbacks, lore references, and other story beats, playing it is the much more viable option.
Returning players could explore a different version of Hyrule that is overrun with different forces. Similar to the first Hyrule Warriors game, the combat is much different from a mainline Zelda game. It is set in a war, and Princess Zelda is in the thick of it with the Zonai.
You Can Play Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment First, Then Continue the Story
If you prefer to stay in the dark about what happens to the future of Hyrule, play this prequel first. It is completely up to your preference, and there is no right or wrong way to get into this lore.
