Dragon Age: The Veilguard, much like any other action RPG, features some really cool puzzles to solve. While a good majority of the main story puzzles in The Veilguard are quite easy, there are a few optional ones that can be a test of wit for players. Some puzzles in the game require gathering key items across Thedas and placing them in very specific locations on the map. The Purple Torch puzzle is one such optional task that requires you to collect key items called Scattered Bones and bring them back to designated places. Although the process of completing the Purple Torch puzzle is quite tedious, it does reward you handsomely for your efforts.

Completing the Purple Torch puzzle not only rewards you with armor but also a weapon for your Companions. Naturally, it’s one of the optional bits of The Veilguard that you certainly don’t want to miss out on. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to solve the Purple Torch puzzle in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Purple Torch Puzzle Location in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

The Purple Torch puzzle is located within the Necropolis. You will encounter this puzzle near the Path of Sighs area; however, there’s a catch. To access this puzzle, you need to have Emmrich as your Companion. Once you recruit Emmrich in your party, you will unlock fast travel to the Necropolis. From the Crossroads Eluvian of Necropolis, head straight until you reach the area’s merchant. Near the merchant in the central hub area, take the left door and proceed ahead until you reach a grand staircase with a statue at its end. Head down the stairs and proceed to the room past the statue. Inside the room, you will find a coffin guarded by two purple torches.

You need to get a Wisp from the coffin to unlock a door in one of the earlier rooms. Before you reach the room with the coffin, you will find another room with four Purple Torches and a locked gate. Behind the gate, you will find a treasure chest with some useful Companion gear. However, to unlock the door, you first need to solve the Purple Torch puzzle.

All Purple Torch (Scattered Bone) Locations

Once you interact with the coffin, a Wisp will exit out of it, scattering the bones, which you will need to collect. You have a total of 1 minute and 45 seconds to collect all the scattered bones and return them to the coffin. While the process of collecting the bones can feel quite tedious, it’s actually quite easy. You simply need to follow the Wisp and look for the Purple Torches. The scattered bones are located across the area to the right of the room with the coffin. The best way to collect all the scattered bones is to keep an eye on the Wisp and not waste too much time wandering in the area.

There’s no major downside to failing the puzzle, besides having to restart your hunt for the scattered bones all over again. Thankfully, all the scattered bones are found within the same area, just in different parts of the room. Here’s a rundown of all the Scattered Bone (Purple Torch) locations:

Purple Torch 1: The first Purple Torch and Scattered Bone location is right behind the coffin. It’s pretty hard to miss as the Wisp will directly guide you to it.
Purple Torch 2: The second Purple Torch and Scattered Bone is located in the room before the one with the coffin. Inside the room, you will find wooden boxes, and behind them, you will find the Scattered Bones.
Purple Torch 3: The third Purple Torch and Scattered Bone is in the same room as the second one, albeit upstairs. Head up the stairs in the room and turn right. You will reach a small platform which leads to a small room. Inside the small room, you will find the third Scattered Bone.
Purple Torch 4: The fourth Purple Torch and Scattered Bone can be found in the same room as the previous two, albeit downstairs and to the left.
Purple Torch 5: The fifth and final Purple Torch (Scattered Bone) can be found in the hallway following the stairs where you found the fourth Purple Torch.
