What is After Death Do Us Part in BG3?
In Baldur’s Gate 3, After Death Do Us Part is an accessory piece that any class or companion can equip to gain a partial revive when Downed. However, it does come at a potential cost. The After Death Do Us Part bonus on this ring will automatically restore half of the wearer’s hit points whenever they are Downed. The Downed condition in BG3 happens when your character reaches an HP of 0. At that time, the character will ‘fall’ and no longer be able to participate in combat. However, they are not yet killed and you have a few chances to heal them before they die.
Consequently, the After Death Do Us Part ring will automatically heal a Downed character for half of their hit points, giving them a second chance in battle. Unfortunately, the cost to this is that the restored character will have the Shadow Possession condition. This will cause them to attack the nearest creature, whether friend or foe. Additionally, your weapon attacks will deal extra Necrotic damage. The Shadow Possession condition can be cured with the Remove Curse or Greater Restoration spells.

How to Get After Death Do Us Part in BG3?
To get the After Death Do Us Part ring in BG3 you must first find the artist Oskar Fevras in the Zhentarim Hideout during Act 1. Then, much later in Act 3, you can find either Oskar or Lady Jannath at the Jannath Estate on the far west side of the Lower City. If you saved Oskar in Act 1, then you can find him at the Jannath Estate in Act 3. If you fight Kerri and tell Jannath the truth, then Oskar will drop After Death Do Us Part. Additionally, if Kerri is allowed to kill Oskar, then you will also be rewarded with the same ring.
Step 1- Find the Zhentarim Basement in Act 1
The first step to getting After Death Do Us Part comes in Act 3 when you find the Zhentarim Hideout. The best way to start this is to encounter the traders trapped by attacking Gnolls along the Risen Road. Help save the traders and you will begin the quest Find the Missing Shipment. The trader Rugan will give you information and the password to the Zhentarim Hideout if he’s alive. However, even if he’s dead you can get the same information from him by casting Speak with Dead on his corpse.
Next, travel west towards Waukeen’s Rest. There will be an inn on fire and you can choose to help some people trapped inside. When those events are concluded, move past the inn to the west where you’ll find some barns. One of the barns has some crates stacked in front of a doorway. Move or destroy the crates to get past them.
Inside the barn, you will be challenged by a guard, but give him the password and you can use the secret entrance in the wardrobe. This passageway will finally lead you into the Zhentarim Basement below.
Step 2- Speak to Oskar
As you make your way into the Basement hideout in the first open space you’ll encounter the captured artist Oskar Fevras. Speak to him and he’ll ask you to buy his freedom.
Next, go over and talk to Brem about buying the artist’s freedom. Brem wants to charge you 1,000 gold but will knock down the price to 600 gold if you can pass a 15 DC Persuasion roll or a 20 DC Intimidation roll. After paying off Brem, speak to Oskar again. He’ll be grateful but also ask for another 200 gold. You do not have to give this to him to guarantee his safe passage to Baldur’s Gate, however. He’ll be there in Act 3 regardless of your further generosity.
Step 3- Find Oskar Fevras in Act 3
You won’t see Oskar again until you reach the Lower City in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3. Make your way to the west side of the city to find the Janneth Estate. It’s north of the Steel Watch Foundry and south of the House of Grief.
Inside the mansion will be haunted with Poltergeists causing chaos. Head upstairs two floors to the right to find Lady Janneth and Oskar in the bedroom. Three ghosts will appear to attack you, but you can immediately get rid of them by knocking Oskar out. Be careful to use a non-lethal blow because killing him will prematurely end the quest.
Next, Lady Janneth will ask you to reach the atelier on the top floor. To get there you will need to get past several cursed skulls. The best way to deal with them is by casting the Silence spell. Spirit Guardians is also helpful when dealing with the skulls.
Finally, at the top floor take the painting of Oskar and place it on the easel. This will open a secret panel and inside you find a possessed portrait. Break open the locked chest behind it and read the letter inside.
Step 4- Go to Mystic Carrion
The next step in this long quest chain is to find Mystic Carrion at Philgrave’s Mansion. The best way to enter the building is by lock-picking the secret entrance on the west side. Mystic Carrion will be directly inside on this same basement level. Speaking to Mystic Carrion will reveal that helped Oskar and can give you the item you need. He offers the Torch of Revocation for 3,000 gold, or you can do him a favor. This leads to the Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant quest.
No matter how you choose to complete this quest, you can still get the Torch of Revocation. Side with Mystic Carrion and he will give it to you as a reward. However, even if you kill Mystic Carrion you can still get the Torch of Revocation by taking it out of the chest at the back of the room.
Step 5- Complete Free the Artist Quest
Finally, take the Torch of Revocation back to the top floor of the Janneth Estate. Equip the torch as a weapon and attack the portrait. This will draw out the spirit of Kerri Evenfield. She is furious with Oskar and wishes to kill him.
You can choose to fight Kerri to protect Oskar, but then you must tell Lady Janneth the truth to get the After Death Do Us Part ring.
Your second option is to stand by and let Oskar receive his punishment from Kerri.
However, if you succeed on the two dialogue checks to keep Kerri from attacking Oskar, then you will not receive the ring. Instead, Oskar will offer to paint you a portrait as a reward. This painting is valuable and can be sold for 1,500. Unfortunately, there is no way to receive both the painting and After Death Do Us Part in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to use After Death Do Us Part in BG3?
All you have to do to use the After Death Do Us Part ring in BG3 is equip it to any character or class, especially any party member who may have trouble staying alive. This could be a good accessory piece for a spellcaster with a lower Armour Class, for example. If their HP drops to zero while wearing this ring, the ring will automatically restore half their hit points.
However, at the same time, the wearer will receive the Shadow Possession condition. This renders them mad, and they will automatically attack the nearest creature. Furthermore, they will do some additional Necrotic damage with their weapon.
Therefore, while you are using this ring you will want to make sure that you have access to either the Remove Curse or Greater Restoration spells. Either of these can remove the Shadow Possession condition. Any character can cast Remove Curse using a scroll, or the spell can be learned by Clerics, Warlocks, or Wizards at Level 5. Greater Restoration can be learned by Bards, Life Clerics, and Circle of the Land Druids at Level 9.
