Who is Kishibe in Chainsaw Man? Explore this character’s identity, strengths and abilities, and role in the series.

Chainsaw Man follows the journey of Denji, a young boy who gains the powers of the Chainsaw Devil. As a result, he is scouted by the Public Safety Devil Hunters and works to uphold societal peace.
While Denji was initially lonely, poverty-stricken, and living a depressing life, he comes across a variety of friends and allies while working as a Devil Hunter. Kishibe is one among these, having a significant influence on the protagonist. So, who is Kishibe in Chainsaw Man?
Kishibe is a seasoned Devil Hunter who leads the Tokyo Special Division 4, personally mentoring Denji. His wise and enigmatic personality makes him a unique individual in Chainsaw Man, and he was one of the few to recognize the main antagonist. Here is a closer look at him.
Who Is Kishibe in Chainsaw Man?

Kishibe is an elite warrior over the age of 50, working as a Public Safety Devil Hunter. Despite being old, he is a highly capable man who is considered the strongest in his division by Makima. Due to this, Kishibe also doesn’t get flustered easily, often having a stoic face.
However, this doesn’t mean he is emotionless. Rather, Kishibe is a surprisingly caring individual who wishes to protect several people. He grew very close to Denji and Power after training them. Additionally, he believes that the best Devil Hunters are those who are a little “insane.” Hence, Kishibe provided valuable advice to both Aki and Himeno regarding the dangers of their work.
Kishibe’s most highlighted feature is his intellect and insight. Right from the very beginning, he suspected Makima of being a secretive villain with disastrous plans for humanity. Hence, he was constantly on his toes against her, waiting for the opportune moment to strike.
Kishibe’s Strengths and Abilities

As seen earlier, Kishibe is widely regarded as one of the most skillful and powerful figures in Chainsaw Man. He was strong enough to overpower both Denji and Power, face Quanxi’s fiends, and evenly fight Quanxi herself for a short period.
Kishibe may be a human, but his strength, speed, and senses are extremely enhanced. He has shown talent with weapons and hand-to-hand combat, incapacitating most who face him. Additionally, Kishibe has at least three Devil contracts, with those confirmed being the Claw, Knife, and Needle Devils.
There is a high chance of him having more since Quanxi’s fiends mentioned he had very few body parts left to sacrifice as contracts. Most importantly, Kishibe is a master strategist who is always able to look at the big picture. At a time when most characters believed Makima to be a hero, he was the only one who suspected her. This made him instrumental in her eventual downfall.
Kishibe’s Role in Chainsaw Man

Kishibe is both a mentor and an enforcer in Chainsaw Man. He was first introduced by Makima as Power and Denji’s trainer, preparing them to get stronger and face dangerous devils. However, to achieve this, he took an unorthodox approach that involved continuously fighting the duo and honing their experience.
Through their battles, Kishibe formed a close relationship with Denji and Power in spite of his intense dislike of fiends and devils. Soon after this, he directly confronted Makima and stated his suspicions of her. His iconic line calling her a liar set up his eventual call to action in the series.
During the International Assassins Arc, Kishibe worked hard to protect Denji from global assassins. He attempted to ally with Quanxi to defeat Makima but was swiftly turned down. The two then proceeded to have an intense battle before the Hell Devil interfered.

Finally, after Makima’s involvement in both Power and Aki’s deaths, Kishibe realized it was time for action. He assembled a special task force and brutally attacked her. Following this, the members of the task force sacrificed themselves to summon the Hell Devil and permanently defeat Makima.
Unfortunately, Makima had complete control over Denji and asked him to save her as Chainsaw Man. While the protagonist fought Makima’s enemies, Kishibe had a deep exchange of words with the Control Devil. He understood her motives to “save” the world, though he was unable to kill her at that point.
Kishibe’s Final Fate in Chainsaw Man

Fans will be delighted to know that Kishibe does not die by the end of Chainsaw Man Part 1. After Makima’s conversation with him, the antagonist engaged in a fierce battle with Denji, leaving the protagonist gravely wounded. Fortunately, Power’s blood kept Denji alive, allowing him to take refuge in a dumpster.
Kishibe saved him from there and took him to a secluded location. He then motivated Denji to regain his spirit, making him voice his dreams and ambitions. Soon after this, Denji enacted his plan to kill Makima and succeeded. Though Kishibe was stunned that the protagonist’s plan worked, he shared how eating Makima would likely not prevent her reincarnation.

This was proven through Kishibe’s final appearance in Chainsaw Man, where he introduced a young girl to Denji. He explained how she was the new Control Devil and that he found her in China. Surprisingly, the veteran then told Denji to take care of the girl, who went on to be called Nayuta.
Suggesting that Denji’s love could prevent the Control Devil from becoming evil again, he helped the protagonist find a new sister. This is the main feature of Chainsaw Man Part 2, where Denji and Nayuta share a heartwarming relationship.
Conclusion
Kishibe is one of the most memorable characters in Chainsaw Man, playing an important role in Denji’s life. He helped the protagonist find happiness while also assisting in Makima’s defeat.
Given his survival, there is a high possibility of Kishibe returning in Chainsaw Man Part 2. Since Denji is suffering yet again in the sequel, the appearance of his mentor may help rekindle his spirit.
