Dandadan has two main characters: Momo Ayase and Ken Takakura, commonly known as Okarun. The show heavily focuses on the growth of these protagonists and the dynamic shared between them. Let us take a closer look at these.
Who Is Momo Ayase in Dandadan?
Momo Ayase is the female main character in Dandadan. During her introduction, Momo is a bold and confident character who does not bow down to anyone. Even when faced with entities such as aliens, ghosts, and other supernatural beings, Momo hardly ever openly shows fear and thinks of ways to escape danger.
While her fiery personality might make her seem dominating, Momo is a very kind and caring person who looks out for others. When Okarun was being bullied by his classmates, Momo was quick to step in and stop them. As soon as she was rude to Okarun during their conversation, she was quick to realize and make amends with him.
Momo wears her heart on her sleeve around people she trusts, while openly showing happiness and sadness. A notable characteristic of hers is that Momo loves the actor Ken Takakura. This is also why she refuses to use Okarun’s real name, which is the same as the actor’s.
Momo’s grandmother is a well-known spirit medium called Seiko, from whom she got most of her knowledge. She had fought with her at a young age due to the good luck ritual Seiko made her do while going to school, causing others to make fun of her.

Okarun is the male main character of Dandadan and is an introverted fanatic of aliens and UFOs. At the start of the series, Okarun has very low self-esteem and is socially awkward. Even after becoming friends with Momo, he keeps questioning whether he really deserves to be with her.
However, Momo’s straightforward personality helps push Okarun out of his shell. This helps him become more open towards new relationships.

While their contrasting personalities caused some bumps in their bond, they were able to be honest with each other and get through hurdles. Their dynamic was originally based on support and playful banter with each other but eventually grew to romantic feelings.
Right from when Momo got jealous of Aira to when Okarun admitted he thought of Momo as cute, the manga has progressed to the point where both characters openly admit that they love each other.
Momo and Okarun’s Abilities in Dandadan
While Dandadan often seems like a jolly storyline, there are very real threats that could prove fatal to our main characters. To fight back against these, both Momo and Okarun have honed their own special abilities.
By tapping into her ki, Momo can awaken her spiritual powers and detect yokai, spirits, and other creatures. Going beyond just detection, Momo can use psychokinetic abilities with her Spiritual Powers. This helps her fight enemies even if she is trapped and also defend herself against attacks. During her fight with Turbo Granny, she used this ability to restrain the yokai multiple times and while escaping with Okarun.
On the other hand, Okarun’s ability is something he gained after possessing Turbo Granny rather than being innate. This allows him to go into his “Turbo Granny Form” and gain immense speed, durability, and a boost in power. He had used the rapid force of this form to launch himself at Acrobatic Silky during their battle.
This form of Okarun is notable since it gives him white hair, stripes on his face, and a distinctive mask. It also makes him very depressed while deepening his voice.
Momo and Okarun’s Role in Dandadan
As the main characters of Dandadan, Momo and Okarun guide us through their wild and twisted world filled with all kinds of supernatural beings. With their wacky but competent personalities, they help in resolving situations while creating a lot of laughs.
At the same time, as we saw in the seventh episode of the Dandadan anime, the series is a lot more than just explosive fights with different creatures. Each yokai and spirit has complex stories of their own, which often lead to heart-wrenching moments.
