Knowing the right answers and commands to Bernard’s conversation in Baldur’s Gate 3 is crucial. If you don’t interact with him properly, you will not get any loot after the dialogue. This is why it is important to be familiar with how you can respond to him.
Bernard is a construct who only converses using poetry. You will come across this NPC upon reaching the Arcane Tower in the Underdark. Considering his way of conversation, you must also respond the same way in order to make progress with this dialogue.

All Bernard Questions and Answers in Baldur’s Gate 3
Here is a quick rundown of all the questions Bernard will throw and the right answers you should choose:
New sounds through damp and dark oppression break/ is it the foe that foul, contemptuous heel?
- Answer: “Or art thou friend, a rescue from my lonely wake?”
- Reward: All characters receive 50 XP.
Command as you see fit, my lord, my liege.
- Answer: “How can I trust? How will I ever know? / How can I show myself, my darkest me?”
- Reward: The Guiding Light ring, which Bernard will place on a table.
- Alternate Answer: “The silence stretches on ~ I’m all alone. / Please, can I hold your hands just for a while?”
- Reward: No rewards. But Bernard will hug you.
If you do not your deepest secrets show? Reveal your truth, give what you wish to see.
- Answer: Head to the table and pick up the Guiding Light before approaching Bernard and interacting with him.
- Reward: No rewards.
Command as you see fit, my lord, my liege.
- Answer: “These empty sheets are all that’s left of you. / The last of all the thoughtless gifts you have.”
- Reward: You receive a Potion of Greater Healing

Where To Find Answers to Bernard’s Questions?
You can find all the answers in the Arcane Tower. These books will contain all of the right responses to Bernard’s questions:
- Parched Parchment
- Torn–out paper
- The Roads to Darkness
- Threadbare
- Dusty Book
You don’t have to find these answers yourself if you already know the responses.

Loot for Killing Bernard in Baldur’s Gate 3
Alternatively, you can also antagonize Barnard, and he will go hostile. You need to defeat him in order to get loot from him. Here is what he drops upon death:
- Light of Creation (Martial two-handed melee weapon)
- Guiding Light (Uncommon Ring)
- Scroll of Prayer of Healing (Magical Scroll)
- Antique key
As you can see, the loot may vary depending on how you approach this interaction. Either way, you still get the Guiding Light ring, whichever path you choose.
