When developers Larian Studios announced at their last Panel from Hell that Warlock companion Wyll’s character would be receiving a complete rewrite, many were surprised at the news. Recent follow up information has confirmed that not only has the character changed, but the voice actor for the character has been recast.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Wyll in Early Access

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been available on Steam in Early Access since October of 2020. In those almost three years, many players have been able to fully explore the first act of the game. Over time, additional classes, races and more were added as developers Larian Studios worked on improving the gameplay experience.

As he is introduced in the game in Early Access, Wyll is a human warlock of a noble background. He has become a great hero, known as the ‘Blade of the Frontiers’. The populace love him for his deeds defending villages, protecting innocents and slaying monsters. What many don’t know (and spoilers ahead for those who many not wish to know) is that he has acquired his strongest powers in a pact. By making a deal with a fiend named Mizora after witnessing terrible destruction wrought by a horde of goblins.

After time and energy seeking revenge, Wyll has come to regret his pact and wishes to be free of it. Before he and Mizora can speak of it, they are interrupted and captured by the nautiloid that sets the stage for the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Recast Voice Actor

As mentioned previously, during the Panel from Hell Livestream back on July 7th the developers revealed to the audience that the character of Wyll would be receiving a complete rewrite. From what they had seen on their end in data and reports was that Wyll in particular was a character where players just weren’t really connecting to his story and how it developed through Act 1. This likely lead to a lot of internal discussions about what they could change and how much. With the answer being they were going to completely change and rewrite the character. What they didn’t tell us at the time was that this would result in a recasting of the voice actor.

Larian has not yet made any official comment on why the change was made, but general speculation lends itself to what is likely a fairly understandable scenario. If they are rewriting the character and chaning the story as heavily as implied that that would certainly impact most, if not all, of his in-game dialogue. This would require the original voice actor, Lanre Malaolu, who certainly did a fine job, to come back into the studio for additional line readings and motion capture. However, it’s entirely possible that he had moved onto other projects and could not commit the time needed to come back.

Theo Solomon announced his introduction as Wyll yesterday on his Instagram, thanking the production crew at Larian for the excellent experience. According to his Voice Squad page Solomon has been doing professional voice over work for years, with credits such as work for several companies including Amazon, FIFA, BBC, Sky and Dreamworks. He’s also narrated several audiobooks, including a 12-hour Warhammer 40,000 book called Leviathan.
