Minecraft is a simple survival sandbox game built around playing with blocks. However, this doesn’t mean the game is simple. Many hostile mobs can and will kill you if you are not careful, which can happen easily. To help, the game allows you to make armor and weapons for survival. Moreover, you can enhance your equipment with enchantments to bestow it with powerful passives.

Additionally, you must craft an Enchanting Table, which allows you to unlock enchantments. However, you do not get the best enchantments right when you place down your Enchanting Table. You have to place bookshelves around for it to unlock its true potential. Moreover, there are some rules that you have to follow to get the best placement of bookshelves.

Here’s a guide to help you get the best Enchanting Table setup in Minecraft.

If you want to get the highest levels in your Enchanting Table, you need at least 15 bookshelves. To craft all that, you will need these many items:

  • 90x Wooden Plank
  • 45x Book

With all these items in your inventory, you have to craft 15 bookshelves. You can now start with your placement of blocks.

Firstly, you must understand how the bookshelf reacts to the Enchanting Table. For every bookshelf within the 5×5 area of an Enchanting Table, it gets powered up. As you keep using more bookshelves, the more powerful and higher-level enchantments are unlocked, with the highest being level 30 enchantments.

For both the Java and Bedrock versions of Minecraft, there are different rules for placement. For example, you cannot place anything else between the Enchanting Table in Bedrock, as it would count as an obstruction by blocks, whereas it is not the same in Java. Additionally, there are rules for the corner placements as well.

To accommodate players of both versions, here’s a setup by following the rules from both versions:

Place your Enchanting Table two blocks away from any walls or blocks. Now you must place six bookshelves behind the Enchanting Table, two rows and three columns. Now, place bookshelves on each side of the Enchanting Table just like in the picture. Do avoid filling the corners, as the table might not recognise it as part of the setup in some versions.

With the necessary set-up done, you can place additional bookshelves for decorative purposes. Additionally, with this setup, you can sometimes get additional enchantments on your equipment when enchanting it.
