Everything you need to know about the Companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard and whether you can play as them or not.
The Dragon Age series has always been about choices and consequences, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn’t any stranger to this rule. While the latest title in the iconic RPG series does seem quite distinct compared to its predecessors, it still retains most of the franchise’s core tenets. However, despite some obvious similarities to its predecessors, The Veilguard is quite different from what fans of the series have come to expect from Dragon Age. The biggest departure from the core Dragon Age experience here is that in The Veilguard, you cannot play as or take control of your Companions. This is easily the biggest change that the latest entry brings to the table in terms of gameplay.
The party system, as well as Companion quests, work basically the same as how they used to in Dragon Age: Inquisition. However, during combat and regular gameplay, you can only play as the Rook. Companions still follow you around and interact with the Rook, but aren’t playable themselves. Here’s everything you need to know about the Companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
How Does the Companion System Work in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you come across new Companions as you progress through the main story. Think of it like how the Companion system works in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth titles. Once you unlock multiple Companions, you can choose which ones will be joining the Rook on their adventure. At any given time, you can have only two active Companions besides the Rook. Furthermore, every Companion in The Veilguard has their own quests (Companion Quests), and also romance options. Unlike in past Dragon Age games, you can romance all the Companions in The Veilguard. However, if you start a relationship with any one of them, you won’t be able to romance anyone else.
While the Companions in The Veilguard aren’t playable like in past Dragon Age games, there’s still a way to command them. During combat, you can issue commands to the Companions and use their unique skills to your advantage. Furthermore, certain Companion skills synergize with that of the Rook’s allowing you to deal more damage with a single ability. The Companion system here is pretty much how it used to work in the Mass Effect games, but with a bit more depth.
How Many Companions Are There in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
There are a total of 7 Companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Although some of them, like Lace Harding and Neve Gallus, join the Rook from the very beginning of the game, most of them are unlocked as you progress through the main story. Thankfully, none of the Companions are missable in The Veilguard, and can be swapped around in the Rook’s party at any time during gameplay. Furthermore, most of the Companion quests are optional and aren’t necessary for the main story. However, given the stories these characters have to offer, you don’t want to miss out on their questlines. That being said, here’s a list of all the Companions in The Veilguard:
- Lace Harding
- Neve Gallus
- Davrin
- Lucanis Dellamorte
- Emmrich Volkarin
- Bellara
- Taash
