What Is the Fracture in Clair Obscur Expedition 33?
The Fracture refers to the time when a mysterious entity known as the Paintress appears, alongside a massive monolith. Since then, the city of Lumière has been cut off from the rest of the world. This is not merely a background event. It is the organizing principle around which Clair Obscur’s world and storytelling revolve
As the name implies, the Paintress appears annually to paint a number on the monolith. People whose age corresponds with the number on the monolith will then dissolve and die. This annual event is called the Gommage.

When Did the Fracture Happen in Clair Obscur Expedition 33?
According to the in-game story of Clair Obscur Expedition 33, the Fracture happened around 67 years ago. Since then, every year, the Paintress would reappear and paint a new number onto the monolith. This curses the residents with the same age as the number shown in the tower.
No one knows exactly where this mysterious deity came from and why she is doing this. This is why an expedition is frequently sent out to investigate the monolith. However, none of the expeditions, or at least their members, return.
Expedition 0, the first ever attempt to investigate the monolith and its mysterious entity, did not go as planned, as they were not able to return. Everyone who got sent out to investigate disappeared without a trace. Despite this, the expeditions continued until the game’s events, where it’s already at Expedition 33.
