On top of delivering packages, Death Stranding has another core mechanic where you build structures using the Portable Chiral Constructor, or the PCC. This item is quite handy, as it allows you to traverse harsh terrains, like building a bridge to cross rivers. As you progress in the game, you unlock more structures that you can build.

Building a structure requires materials. However, if you are playing online and the area you are in is covered by the Chiral Network, random players can offer their own materials to help finish your structure. If you are playing alone, you will need to find the materials yourself.

You can unlock the PCC after completing Order 3 in Death Stranding 2. At other times, you can steal one from MULEs or find one randomly in lost cargo. This item allows you to start building the structures you need in the game.

To start building, make sure you are holding the PCC and hold left on the D-pad. This will show a hologram of the structure you want to build. If it is blue in color, that means there is enough space to build it. Otherwise, you need to move it a bit, as there may be obstructions in the area. Once you find a suitable spot, you can place down your structure by pressing the R2 button.

Some structures in Death Stranding 2 also require materials to complete the building process. Examples include bridges and safe houses. This means you need to decide whether you want to grind for the resources just to build one. Either way, these structures are worth building, as they can make exploration easier and less of a problem. These structures can also be upgraded to increase their durability or functionality.

However, keep in mind that you cannot just keep building structures. Each structure has its own set of bandwidth. If you max out your capacity, you will not be able to build any more structures unless you free up some space.

Once you finish building your structure, you can apply some upgrades. Hold down the square button on your controller to interact with the structure. This will show you options like dismantle, upgrade, and customize.

Upgrading a structure in Death Stranding 2 will give it bonus effects. These include the ability to add custom greetings for other players, play music, say a message, or show a hologram. A structure with a Level 3 upgrade will also be more resistant to decay.

Keep in mind that all structures will still decay over time, regardless of their upgrades. This means nothing is permanent, and you might need to repair or rebuild them eventually. That said, upgrades can delay decay and add a bit of fun and interactive features for you and other players.

However, not everything will be available to you from the start. You need to unlock some of them as you make progress.
