While exploring in Death Stranding 2, you will hear about the Lord of the Tar Lake quite a few times. The first time you will hear about it (without the name) is the mysterious audio recording that Tarman has you deliver to the Musician. The main NPC associated with the Lord of the Tar Lake is the Fisherman, who can be found right beside the tar lake.

So, how do you unlock, encounter, and defeat the Lord of the Tar Lake? Successfully defeating it also unlocks the Showdown at the Tar Lake achievement in Death Stranding 2.

How To Unlock Lord Of The Tar Lake In Death Stranding 2?

The Lord of the Tar Lake encounter can be unlocked by increasing your connection level with the Fisherman to above four and close to five.

The Fisherman is unlocked with Sub Order 116 from F5 East Distribution Center. You can increase connection levels by delivering to that location, completing the standard order of elimination Floating BTs near the Fisherman, and delivering lost cargoes belonging to him. You can find some of the last options in the land that crop into the tar lake (as shown in the image).

Once you have met the aforementioned connection level with the Fisherman, you will get a prompt on the Social Strand Service (SSS) with a post from him. He mentions he has a sub order waiting for you. Go and accept Sub Order 117. There are two objectives:

  • Catch a Large BT near the Ghost Mech Factory
  • Defeat the Lord of the Tar Lake

Catch a Large BT near the Ghost Mech Factory (BT Delphis)

You should use the DHV Magellan to fast travel in Death Stranding 2 to the Data Scientist. Make a save here, in case you mess up later on. From there, go straight to the location with an EX Capture Grenade and allow yourself to be grabbed and dragged by BTs to trigger the large BT spawn.

Keep in mind that you must bring its health down to red but not kill it. If you do eliminate it, you will have to reload to the latest save (mentioned before) or abandon the sub order and start the cycle again.

Once the BT’s health bar is red, throw an EX Capture Grenade in its mouth. After that, pick up the white chiralium hand from the ground. This will net you the BT Delphis spawn to be used later on.

Make sure you have Rocket Launchers, Machine Guns, and EX Capture Grenades for this encounter. Go back to the Tar Lake and step into the circle that the Fisherman has marked. Step out of your vehicle or down from your coffin board (you will not be able to call a BT otherwise) and call BT Delphis. You can do the latter by holding right on the d-pad, switching to the Special category, and cycling to BT Delphis.

Once the BT Delphis spawns, the Lord of the Tar Lake appears within the next few seconds, swallowing it whole. This triggers the encounter and the fight. This is not a difficult skirmish at all. The mammoth whale flies about at a steady pace and has telegraphed attacks that you can dodge.

I suggest you get up on the small outcrop (as shown in the picture) and rain down your attacks. Once you get its health down to red, use an EX Capture Grenade to catch the Lord of the Lake. Do not summon any BTs for the fight, as they will definitely end up killing before you can capture it. You need to make sure you capture the Lord of the Lake within the mission, as there will be no other future encounters with this BT (although it’s hinted there might be more such mammoth whale BTs).

Once you have defeated/captured the BT, go back to the Fisherman terminal to report the same and complete the sub order.
