The Last Stranding is the ultimate phenomenon in DS2, which can completely wipe out humanity from Earth. The Last Stranding is the sixth and final mass extinction on planet Earth, fated to wipe out humankind. The Extinction Entity (EE) responsible for the Last Stranding mass extinction is Amelie, the soul (ka) of Bridget Strand, which is separated from her physical body (ha) in the real world.

Throughout history, Earth has experienced five major mass extinctions triggered by prehistoric EEs, including a mammoth, an iceman, a dinosaur, a trilobite, and an ammonite. The Extinction Entities are not purely destructive. The fact that the EEs didn’t erase all life from the planet entirely suggests that extinction is part of a natural cycle, allowing the rebirth of life forms from death.

Sam’s efforts to unite America through the Chiral Network became the catalyst for the Last Stranding by linking all people to Amelie’s Beach. This mass connection generates enough energy and provides the opportunity to trigger the final extinction. However, Sam’s emotional compassion at the end of the first game persuades Amelie to delay the inevitable Last Stranding extinction, providing hope and time for the future.
