The Cyber Dragon is the Slayer’s trusted aerial companion, one who is mechanically enhanced in Doom The Dark Ages. Unlike other dragons, this elite creature has turrets mounted on its shoulders, called the Autocannon. Moreover, it has wings that are not entirely natural and look like a yellow cyber network of fibres. It is a master of aerial combat, and there are quite a few missions in the game where you will have to ride this creature into battle.
Combat with the Cyber Dragon is similar to that of Atlan’s combat in many aspects. It resembles a mid-air dogfight for the most part, and is entirely ranged for the most part. This mode also focuses on Perfect Dodge significantly, and you will need to use it as a necessity in many cases. Doom The Dark Ages Cyber Dragon Combat Overview
Almost the entirety of Cyber Dragon’s combat in Doom The Dark Ages is ranged. The Autocannon is your primary mode of fire, both for stationary and moving targets. The Cyber Dragon has a special “Assault Mode” that allows it to lock on to specific targets, and can also perfect dodge to empower them. If we break it down, the Cyber Dragon’s combat can be separated into three types:
- Destroying Demonic Turrets
- Defeating Large Demons
- Destroying Enemy Ships
Other than the enemy ships, the other two rely significantly on perfect dodges to empower the Autocannons attacks. Here are the basic aspects of the Cyber Dragon that you need to know in Doom The Dark Ages:
- Autocannon Fire: Pressing your primary fire key keeps shooting from the Autocannons mounted on the Cyber Dragon’s shoulders. When not enhanced, they have an orange-red tracer.
- Assault Mode: Holding your alternate fire key puts the Cyber Dragon into Assault Mode, where it locks on to the nearest target automatically. If you defeat/destroy a target, pressing a direction key will automatically make it lock on to the next target in that direction.
- Dodge: While in Assault Mode, press the appropriate button (Spacebar on PC) + any direction key to dodge to that side.
- Perfect Dodge: You can dodge Hellsurge Projectile attacks (ones that are green in color) to perform a Perfect Dodge.
- Empowered Autocannon Fire: After performing a Perfect Dodge, your next few attacks are empowered. These shots have a thicker tracer and appear bright blue in color, akin to a laser.
- Boost: Pressing the sprint button (Shift on PC) while on the Cyber Dragon allows it to enter a state of faster flying, which is called the Boost.
- Ascend and Descend: The Cyber Dragon can ascend and descend with the press of a single key in Doom The Dark Ages. However, you can also achieve this with your mouse or controller by inputting the right direction.
- Autocannon Boost: Using the Autocannons while on a boost increases the rate of fire.
How to Heal The Cyber Dragon in Doom The Dark Ages?
Fly through the blue rings with a health sign (plus sign) to heal your Cyber Dragon in Doom The Dark Ages. Generally, the Cyber Dragon has a significant amount of health and does not drop below the halfway mark in most cases. However, in case it is low, these blue rings are abundantly found in any missions that require the usage of the Cyber Dragon.
How to Dodge While on Cyber Dragon in Doom The Dark Ages?
Dodging is slightly more complex when on the Cyber Dragon in Doom The Dark Ages. Unlike normal melee combat or with the Atlan, you need to dodge in specific directions here, in most cases. During combat on the Cyber Dragon, how you dodge will depend on the type of incoming attack in Doom The Dark Ages:
- Single Projectile Attack: These attacks are very fast projectiles that come in a single beam. You can perfect dodge any of these if they are Hell Surge imbued, i.e., appear green in color. Simply put yourself in Assault Mode and dodge in any direction to avoid these.
- Single Vertical Line Attack: These are slightly tricky, but also very easy to dodge. Generally, these attacks will have one free side and one side that will have electric jolts. You must only dodge on the free side while in Assault Mode to successfully avoid these. Generally, either one of the sides is always free for you to dodge in these attacks.
- Multiple Vertical Line Attack: These are complex, and can take a while to adjust. The idea is the same, there are multiple lines but with multiple electric jolts on multiple sides. Usually, only one side is free for you to execute a dodge. For these, the free space can be towards the up, down, left, or right.
- Central Attack: Another complex one, but easier to dodge. These projectiles have a central green hell surge projectile, accompanied by other attacks on the left and right. You will have to time the dodge very precisely and move between two vertical strands of attack to dodge these. Generally, any two of the four directions will be free to dodge with this attack.
Doom The Dark Ages Combat Guide: How to Destroy Demonic Turrets
Demonic Turrets will have an energy shield protecting them in Doom The Dark Ages. As such, normal attacks from your Cyber Dragon will not be able to disable them. Here is how you can destroy these:
- Keep using normal Autocannon Fire till the Demonic Turret fires at you.
- Dodge all incoming attacks, and keep an eye out for the green glow on the attacks.
- When there is a green glow, a Hell Surge Projectile attack is incoming. You must Perfect Dodge these.
- If you execute the Perfect Dodge, your Autocannon Fire will be empowered, and the shield will be destroyed.
- One or two more fires from the Cyber Dragon will completely destroy the Demonic Turret.
Demonic Turrets can fire any of the attacks that were discussed above in the dodge section, so keep an eye out on the free sides of the attacks.
Doom The Dark Ages Combat Guide: How to Destroy Large Demons
Here is how you can destroy the Large Demons while on the Cyber Dragon in Doom The Dark Ages:
- Keep firing Autocannons and dodge all incoming attacks from the Demon.
- Demons like to use single-projectile attacks more, which are very fast. Try to avoid as much as possible.
- Look for the Hell Surge projectile attacks and Perfect Dodge these to empower your attacks.
- After some shots, the demon will be weakened, and you will see a purple line around it. This is a visual cue that the demon is stunned.
- Press the appropriate key (Ctrl on PC) to make the Cyber Dragon perform a glory kill-like finisher on the demon.
The number of large demons that you will fight in Doom The Dark Ages while on the Cyber Dragon is very less, but they are a necessary part of the main missions.
Doom The Dark Ages Combat Guide: How to Destroy Enemy Ships
Chasing enemy ships while on the Cyber Dragon in Doom The Dark Ages is nothing short of a scene straight out of a Top Gun movie. You need to chase a ship while firing the Autocannons to eventually destroy it, and get some valuable gold. Here is how you can do this easily:
- When you see the enemy ship, put your Cyber Dragon in boosted mode immediately.
- Your fire rate will increase, so keep following the enemy ship and shooting it like a retro space odyssey.
- The enemy ships will often lead you through spikes and traps that will damage your Cyber Dragon. Pass through healing rings to restore health.
- Keep following and shooting the ship till it explodes.
Destroying enemy ships is not compulsory, but they offer valuable gold. Moreover, if you plan to platinum the game, then this is a necessary section that you must complete.
