In Doom The Dark Ages, the Pincushion and Ricochet upgrades make your Rail Spike Shredder stronger, but which should you get?
Doom The Dark Ages features a wide array of weapons, each of which contributes to a strategy in battle. You’ll often find yourself cycling through all your weapons in the heat of battle and will undoubtedly land on the Rail Spike Shredder at some point.
The Rail Spike Shredder allows you to attack enemies from a distance, letting you chip away at their HP from relative safety. While the weapon may seem designed for targeting one enemy at a time, its upgrade tree offers you some upgrades that say otherwise.
The Pincushion and Ricochet upgrades for the Rail Spike Shredder allow you to target multiple enemies at once. Both choices seem equally exciting and overpowered, but which one should you choose? Should You Get Pincushion or Ricochet Upgrade in Doom The Dark Ages?

The Rail Spike Shredder’s first upgrade makes you pick between the Pincushion and the Ricochet upgrades. Both these skills are designed to target and damage multiple enemies and are placed as interchangeable skills in the upgrade tree. While seeing both skills placed together may lead you to believe they’re equally good, that is not the case.
The Pincushion skill applies the Pincushion effect on demons after you’ve dealt enough damage. This makes the enemies glow yellow, indicating that the effect has been applied. While they’re under this, any parry or shield throw causes damage in a wide area. This has the potential to hit enemies bundled together, letting you take out a group at once if done strategically.
The Ricochet upgrade, on the other hand, makes your Shredder projectiles ricochet and hit one enemy nearby. While this may sound great, it pales in comparison to the Pincushion. The Pincushion, if used well, can take out an entire group. The Ricochet, on the other hand, will only take out two at most. Noting this, we highly recommend unlocking the Pincushion upgrade over the Ricochet.
