Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s release day is finally here. It has been a good year for RPG fans, and The Veilguard only adds to the already impressive tally. While there is some competition in the gaming market, even games previously developed by BioWare are also to be considered.

This is because BioWare has been developing RPGs for many years. Not every game has seen success and praise. Moreover, some titles stood out from the rest, owing to their striking uniqueness.

Now that the world finally gets to enjoy the latest Dragon Age entry, let’s see how it differs from other BioWare games of the past. The studio has worked on around 14 projects excluding remasters. We will explore four different IPs and their differences from the new game that returns players to Thedas.

Baldur’s Gate

In 1998, Baldur’s Gate came into existence with its first installment. BioWare also developed the second installment in the franchise two years later in 2002. The IP didn’t stay with them forever because the studio was focused on other AAA games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. T

he award-winning BG3 was developed by Larian Studios. However, it stuck to the game’s core RPG mechanics while adding new features. A hallmark of the franchise was the top-down view and was maintained for many years.

In the aspect of the setting, Baldur’s Gate is not drastically different from Dragon Age. Both have medieval fantasy settings and rich lore. The RPG elements are also heavily focused on; with emphasis on dialogues, decisions, and their consequences. However, the gameplay is different between the two IPs. Baldur’s Gate requires you to move your cursor and click in a specific area to get your player to move.

Dragon Age, on the other hand, lets players control the character directly through their controller or keyboard in real time without having to wait for the character to travel to a marked location.

Mass Effect and Anthem

The first Mass Effect came out in 2007, and the last and third installment was in 2017. For a decade, BioWare contributed its resources to a third-person shooter rather than their typical medieval RPG. When it comes to the story and setting of the Mass Effect franchise, they are drastically different from Dragon Age. The genre of Mass Effect was sci-fi. Many praised this bold move from the studio.

However, they did not forget their RPG origins completely. In 2019, they released Anthem, another new IP. Unfortunately, it didn’t bring them much success because of myriads of issues. This wrapped up the third-person shooter saga that BioWare had going on for quite a while. Their Dragon Age franchise, on the other hand, is still going strong.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

BioWare collaborated with LucasArts to create an original story that resulted in the birth of Star Wars: KOTOR. The game was an RPG at heart, a signature of the studio. However, it was quite different from the Dragon Age series and The Veilguard in general.

The differences stem from the fact that while Dragon Age was a story created by BioWare, Star Wars had developed a lore and an entirely separate fanbase. The combat mechanics, characters, and camera movements in both games shared some minor similarities but were different in every other way.

Since KOTOR came out in 2003, it might have served as some inspiration for the gameplay in Dragon Age: Origins in 2009.

There were more games developed by BioWare before Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Some of them were remasters which didn’t overhaul the gameplay, story, or setting significantly. So, consider them to be just as different from the latest game set in Thedas.
