In this ESO Mages Guild Guide 2023, I’m going to take you step by step through how to unlock the guild and how best to level the resulting skill line.
How to Unlock
In order to unlock the skill line from the Mages Guild you will first need to be a member. If you have a new character which hasn’t already joined, visit the Mages Guild Hall in your alliance’s starter city. This would be Daggerfall in Glenumbra, Davon’s Watch in Stonefalls, or Vulkhel Guard in Auridon. Once inside the Hall, you will need to speak with an NPC to officially join the guild. This will unlock both the Mages Guild skill line, which you should now be able to pull up in the character skill line UI under Guilds.
Leveling the Skill Line
By reading the tool tip, you will discover that the way to level up the Mages Guild is by collecting or ‘reading’ specific lore books which are scattered around the world of Tamriel. When you find a relevant book, you’ll know it’s a ‘Mages Guild’ tome by the purple glow surrounding the item. Interact with it to pull up the text and ‘read’ it, and you’ll hear a little audio cue followed by the appearance of the Mages Guild level bar on the top left of your screen, recording your progress.
Collecting enough lorebooks to get to level 10 in the Mages Guild is considerably more time consuming than the requirements of the Fighters Guild. If you are on PC, then be sure to download the helpful Lorebooks addon, along with the required libraries, which will pin all of the lorebook locations to your map!
Daily Guild Quests
Like the other main in-game guilds, the Mages Guild also has daily quests you can complete. Doing so will also give you some experience, but in general this is not really considered an effective way of leveling the skill line.
The real reason for doing the daily quests is if you are leveling one of your companions! Completing the Fighters Guild daily quests is the ONLY way to level the Mages Guild skill line on companions. Remember to have your companion out and active before turning in the quest or they will not receive the XP reward.
