Skills play a vital role in Ghost of Yotei’s combat, giving you access to passive abilities that can often be the difference between death and victory. Much like in Ghost of Tsushima, Yotie offers different skill trees, each covering a specific playstyle. Over the course of the game’s story, you will eventually unlock a good majority of all the skills Atsu has access to.

However, at the start of the game, you have to be very smart with how you spend your skill points. To help with that, here’s a comprehensive guide on the best skills that you should unlock first in Ghost of Yotei.

Under the Growth menu, you will find 5 different disciplines of skills for Atsu, these are:

  • Core
  • Onryo
  • Melee
  • Revenge
  • Wolf

Core is essentially comprised of basic combat and traversal skills. It also includes skills that facilitate dodges and parries; as such, your first priority is going to be to max out Core. However, you also want to invest a few points in Melee and Onryo trees as well. Melee, as the name suggests, dictates skills related to weapons (melee class).

Onryo, on the other hand, comprises skills that facilitate Atsu’s stealth abilities. Much like in Ghost of Tsushima, stealth plays a vital role in Ghost of Yotei, especially when it comes to infiltrating enemy camps. Lastly, there are the Revenge and Wolf trees, which have the lowest priority, at least in the earlier parts of the game.

Revenge essentially includes skills that facilitate counterattacks, mounted combat, etc. Whereas Wolf dictates skills related to the Wolf companion.

It should be noted that Core skills are unlocked automatically as you progress through the main story. Skills under other trees are unlocked via Altars of Reflection. However, in the case of Wolf skills, that’s unlocked exclusively via Wolf Dens.

  • Onryo’s Strike: Allows you to land a charged attack that can disarm elite enemies.

  • Concentration (Prioritize this skill if you’re focusing on a ranged playstyle):

Melee

  • Heavenly Slash (Katana): Allows you to perform a charged slash attack, at the cost of two Focus Nodes.
  • Tempest Strike (Dual Katanas): Regular combo for the Dual Katanas, which can easily stagger regular and elite enemies.
