This Ghost of Yotei walkthrough will take you through the Master of the Shamisen quest, one of the best quests in the game.
Ghost of Yotei is a tale of revenge, but this intense story never fails to have moments of tranquility, with the game’s Master of the Shamisen quest being a prime example. This quest takes you on a trip down memory lane, where Atsu gets to relive the pleasant days of her life, long before blood was all she could see. This quest is one of the best quests in the game, and manages to be such without spilling a single drop of blood.
Since Master of the Shamisen deviates so much from the traditional quest formula, it can give you a bit of trouble. If you’re having any issues completing this quest, our guide is here to walk you through it.
How To Begin Master of the Shamisen in Ghost of Yotei

You begin the Master of the Shamisen quest by going to Master Heijiro’s Garden in Yotei Grasslands. This garden is northwest of Yotei’s Shadow Inn. Head to the garden, and Atsu will start reminiscing about the time her mother would bring her to the garden. Head over to the glowing platform at the center of the garden, and you’ll then be able to travel into Atsu’s past memories. This will kick off the Master of the Shamisen quest.

As soon as you travel back into Atsu’s past memories, you’ll see her mother standing before you. She’ll inquire if you’ve trimmed the bamboo, and you can either lie or tell the truth. Either way, the bamboos are not trimmed, and Yone will lead you to them.
Trim the bamboo by attacking them with your blade. The bamboo all glow, so they’re very easy to spot. There are six bamboo you need to trim. Once that’s done, you’ll be thrown right back into the present. Head towards the large gate to your right, but keep your eyes to the left. You’ll spot another glowing platform. Go here for the next flashback sequence.
Your job now is to pick up the pot and follow Yone. There are fish inside this pond. Yone will lead you to the pond, where you have to transfer the pot fish into the lake. Yone will then talk to you for a bit, and you’ll be thrown right back to the present again, where you’ll find the fish all grown up.
Now, cross the bridge before you to get to the next memory sequence. You’ll have to follow Yone and help her plant the sapling. This sequence will be interrupted by Master Heijiro showing up right behind you. He’ll spot your Shamisen and will recognize you right away.
Master Heijiro thought you dead, and now wants to know everything. Walk with him, and he’ll note that he never got to give you his final lesson. Sit with the master and follow along on his final lesson to complete this quest and unlock the Song of Spirit.
