Ghost of Yotei Parry Guide

Learn how to parry in Ghost of Yotei, the mechanics behind it, and why it is important to master the move for the in-game combat.

Mastering parrying in Ghost of Yotei will come in handy as you tackle the vast array of enemies you encounter in Ezo. Mashing buttons/attacks will not work in Sucker Punch’s title, especially at higher difficulties. Enemies will be able to defend against such attacks and then counter with their own. This is where the mechanics of parrying come into play.

You can parry in Ghost of Yotei by pressing L1 right before an enemy’s attack hits (check out the entire controls guide to learn more). Instead of jumping into attacking the enemy, wait for them to make the move and press L1 at the last possible moment to Parry. But there’s more to the technique than this.

Ghost Of Yotei Parry Mechanics

Parriable Attacks

Normal melee attacks are parriable from the start. Blue glint attacks can only be parried or dodged. Red or yellow glint attacks can not be parried.

Parry Deflect

You will have to press L1 right before an enemy attacks to Parry Deflect that attack and avoid damage. Against powerful enemies, successive Parry Deflects will lead to a Parry Interrupt.

Parry Interrupt

Parry Interrupts instantly cancels an enemy’s attack and allows you to counterattack the exposed foe. It will inflict a minor amount of Stagger damage and earn you back a minor amount of Spirit.

  • Staggering: Enemies in Ghost of Yotei have a stagger meter that Atsu can fill to break their defensive stance and kill them. Parrying helps to do so. Once the meter is filled and an enemy is staggered, you will be able to make quick work of the foe.
  • Perfect Parry: It is the first technique that can be unlocked under the Attacks section under Onryo. Parrying an attack at the very last second will slow time and allow you to perform a counterattack. It will also earn you a moderate amount of Spirit. Press L1 to Parry and then counterattack with square or triangle.
  • Healing: Earning any amount of Spirit will slowly let you fill them up and then use it to heal Atsu. Charms can play a major role in this matter.
  • Charms and Armor: As you progress in Ghost of Yotei, you will get access to a variety of armor and charms. Some of their stats will relate to the Parry move. For example, Charm of Stolen Flame ignites your weapon when you parry a fire attack or blocking a fire arrow.
