Once you have engaged in a standoff, the entire camp is alerted to your presence. You will have to hold triangle as one enemy will square up against you in the manner of a duel. You will have to wait till the enemy makes a move towards you to attack before releasing triangle. If you do it at the perfect time, you will instantly kill the enemy and refill one spirit. If you mistime it, the enemy will do a significant amount of damage. Enemies can also feign movement to throw you off.

In Ghost of Yotei, you can augment standoffs through unlocking techniques (Revenge > Attacks). By doing so, you can increase the number of enemies you can engage in a standoff. You will also be able to finish a standoff with your pistol. Charms also increase standoff stats. The Charm of Resolute Victory increases the amount of Spirit you earn per enemy killed. Charm of Drunken Adversary provides a minor chance of finding lootable Sake on enemies killed in a standoff.

If you hear the wolf howling before you engage enemies, you will notice a wolf symbol beside the standoff prompt on the screen. In this scenario, the wolf will join you for the standoff, taking down an enemy if you time your move perfectly.
