However, it isn’t as straightforward as you might assume from that description. In this guide, we’ll offer an extensive walkthrough regarding this side tale, starting from how to trigger it and what you’ll need to do to complete it.
How To Start The Loss We Carry in Ghost of Yotei
You can begin the quest by talking to an NPC named Toku. For that, start from Yotei’s Shadow Inn and head northeast following the Nupur River. After traversing through Serpent’s Pass for a while, you’ll eventually come across the Prospector’s Camp. This is where you’ll find Toku, alongside his pet bear, Shino. He’ll invite Atsu to his camp for some refreshments. Once there, a cutscene begins where Toku will ask her to retrieve a Charm for him. He wants you to lay the charm on the grave of a girl who recently passed, named Mari. Apparently, Mari loved playing with Shino the bear when she was alive, and Toku wants to honor her memory this way.
You will have to seek out Taro the Scavenger, who has the charm in question. As per Toku’s direction, you’ll find Taro camping by Dead Man’s Tree, which is north of your current location.
How To Complete The Loss We Carry in Ghost of Yotei
Here’s what you have to do to complete the quest.
Locate and Speak With Taro
Head north toward Dead Man’s Tree, closely following the mountains in the region. Once you get to this location, you’ll spot Taro and his campsite. Go up and speak to him. He’ll reveal that he has several items in stock, most of which he’s gathered by looting corpses. If it’s your first time speaking with Taro, he’ll also present you with Taro’s Armor, free of charge.
Defeat Saito’s Men
Just as you’re about to talk to Taro about the charm you need, a few of Saito’s men will attack. They are upset over the fact that the merchant is looting corpses, and have come to seek revenge. You’ll need to quickly take these men down before you can continue the quest. There’s a healthy mix of enemies here, with one wielding a spear, another heavy guard with an axe, and a couple of standard swordsmen. Even so, they shouldn’t pose too much of a problem for you.
Buy Toku’s Charm of Blessings
After all the enemies are down, speak with Taro once more and buy Toku’s Charm of Blessings from him for 400 coins. You can also purchase additional charms available at his store.
Proceed To Mari’s Grave
Now that you have the charm, proceed northwest from your current location and reach the Monument Tree. There is a graveyard here, and as you move towards it, you’ll notice Saito’s men harassing a man. Quickly get rid of the enemies, and then speak to the man. You’ll learn that he’s Mari’s father. He’ll also reveal what really happened to Mari. He explains that Shino the bear killer Mari, and asks you to slit the animal’s throat. Mari’s father also prevents you from laying the charm on her grave.
Confront Toku
After learning the truth return to Toku and Shino, and confront him. He’ll reveal that Mari’s father didn’t like Toku, and wanted to hurt him one day after getting drunk. Shino was trying to protect his owner, and when Mari got in the way, the bear attacked her. Toku asks Atsu to be merciful to Shino. Instead, he says he should die if Mari’s father wants revenge. You’ll have two dialogue options here:
- Death is too easy.
- Your bear won’t like that.
Regardless of your choice, Toku will decide to leave and journey to the south, leaving Shino all alone. The quest ends here. However, you’ll need to do a couple of things if you want to earn the rewards from this quest.
The Loss We Carry in Ghost of Yotei: Rewards
You’ll unlock the reward from this quest after a while. Come back to Toku’s campsite to find Shino. Interact with him, and then interact with the bowl nearby twice. If you already have some fish in your inventory, doing this will place those fish in the bowl for the bear. If you don’t have any fish, simply head down to the river here, and collect the fish from the traps there.
After feeding the bear, Shino will lead you to an area near the camp. From here, you can claim the Untamed Loyalty sword kit.
