In Baldur’s Gate 3, many spells let you summon creatures to help you in many situations. These creatures can range from small rats that are good at scouting to even celestial beings to do your bidding.

One of the new subclasses coming in Patch 8, Shadow Magic, will allow a Sorcerer to conjure up darkness and take advantage of the shadows. Additionally, Shadow Magic users can also use an action known as the Hound of Ill Omen.

Using Hound of Ill Omen calls forth a Shadow Mastiff, which has attacks that synergize very well with the Sorcerer. Knowing about this summon can help you overcome many obstacles once Patch 8 is live. Here’s a simple guide to help you better understand how the Hound of Ill Omen works in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Hounds of Ill Omen is an action the Shadow Magic Sorcerer obtains upon leveling up to Level 6. To use Hounds of Ill Omen, you need 3 sorcery points and a bonus action. This action can be used once after every short rest. The action has a range of 18m/ 60ft. This means you can summon the Shadow Mastiff anywhere within 18m or 60 ft from you.

Nimbus, the Shadow Mastiff, has a total of three attacks it can use in battles. The first one is the Umbral Tangle, which summons shadowy vines from the ground to trap your enemies. The second action is Ominous Bite, which is the one you are going to use the most in fights.

When you use Ominous Bite on an enemy, they take damage on hit and can get inflicted with an Omen. An Omen can belong to any of the six types listed below:

  • Fire
  • Cold
  • Acid
  • Lightning
  • Thunder
  • Poison

Let’s say, Nimbus hits a creature with an Ominous Bite, and the creature gets inflicted with Omen of Fire. If you hit the creature with an attack that deals Fire damage, then you will get a sorcery point back. This way, with a proper collection of spells, you can always keep your sorcery points replenished during battles.

The last move the Shadow Mastiff has is a reaction. When an enemy hits Nimbus, you get the opportunity to use the Splinter Shadow reaction, where the Shadow Mastiff splinters off a piece of itself that spawns a new version of it from the shadows. However, one thing you have to remember is that the reaction won’t work if the hound is hit by a Radiant damage-dealing attack.
