Shields are a critical component in Dune Awakening. While you might be picturing shields that you’ll have to hold in one hand, that’s not quite how the Holtzman Shields in the game function. Instead, the shields are a type of force field that protects the wearer from most projectile attacks.

Wearing and activating a shield can also sometimes deflect any projectiles fired at you back towards the shooter, causing damage. After equipping such an item, you can activate it by pressing H on the keyboard. In this guide, we’ll understand exactly how a shield in Dune Awakening functions.

How To Use a Shield in Dune Awakening

Before you can use a Holtzman Shield, you’ll first need to equip it. You can either craft such items after you unlock their schematic research. Or, you might find them as random loot in high-level regions. Either way, once you have it, place it in the associated slot in your inventory. Then, during a combat encounter, you can simply press H to toggle the shield effect on yourself. Press the button again to deactivate it.

Activating the shield will create a bluish glowing outline on your character. As long as it’s active, the shield will protect you from most fast melee and projectile attacks. During this time, the attacks won’t drain your HP bar. Instead, your energy bar will continue to deplete. Getting hit on the shield will cause the energy to drain quicker.

However, you will still take damage from certain types of attacks even with an active shield. For instance, slow melee attacks will drain your health. Fire or poison attacks will also penetrate the shield and hit your character. If your power runs out with the shield activated, you will lose the protection immediately.

When Should You Avoid Using a Shield in Dune Awakening?

If you’re out in the desert, activating a shield is extremely hazardous. The technology attracts sandworms out in the world, and they can zero in on your position much quicker than normal. If you don’t want to become Shai-Hulud chow, make sure you only use the shield while you are inside caves or Imperial Testing Stations.
