Upon your visit to the Hossberg Wetlands in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you will find An Academic Interest quest. An alleged curse is pending on Lavendel, and Rook is the only one who can stop it.

You and your party are tasked with investigating the Gaspin Manor. The mission offers some rewards and unravels whatever is going on in the area.

It adds another chapter to the Venatori plot and lets you level up your ties with the Mourn Watch faction. However, the quest offers many puzzles as you reach deeper into the Gaspin Manor. The first one is met right at the entrance.

Completing An Academic Interest With Flying Colors

Touching a Venatori barrier crystal will take away some of your HP (Source: BioWare)

When you first reach the objective marker, the gateway is blocked by Venatori barrier crystals. This is in the Cavernous Tunnels. A crystal will be in front of the door, which is invincible due to the magic shield around it. Don’t touch it. Instead, head right and reach the end of the small cave. You will come across a vulnerable crystal. Blast it and the others in succession to finally open the gateway.

Move ahead, and there will be some enemies waiting for you. There is also a big crystal in the middle with three smaller crystals floating around it. Defeat the enemies first, then climb the stairs on the left of the crystal in the center. Smash the leftmost crystal and the one next to it as they become vulnerable. Another vulnerable crystal is located on top of the center one. Break that one too. Now it’s time for you to destroy the crystal in the center and keep smashing the other ones until you destroy the next gateway.

Keep in mind that the big crystal with three small ones floating around it will explode soon after they become three in number. Keep destroying them for your own safety because the AoE blast is big and causes massive damage. If they detonate on their own, they will start reappearing one by one.

Solving the Next Two Puzzles

The new hall now has the big crystal in the middle, which is still invincible. Destroy the one on the left of the stairs first and the one in front. After that, destroy the one on the bridge on the right side of the stairs. Now destroy the one on the path to that small bridge. Lastly, you can smash the big center crystal and destroy the gate open.

Now you will discover yourself in a courtyard full of Venatori warriors. We suggest handling them first before solving the puzzle because this is a long one. Destroy the crystals here in the following order:

  • The one on the left of the inactive water fountain.
  • The one right above the fountain.
  • Take the flight of stairs behind the fountain and there will be a vulnerable crystal in the back. Destroy it.
  • Next, destroy the one in front of it.
  • Lastly, blast the crystal at the base of these stairs.
  • Now, come back to your starting position and destroy the crystal on the right of the inactive water fountain. It is one of those ‘alpha’ crystals that keep on exploding so be careful.
  • Continue on the path ahead of this crystal into a small room below a platform. Destroy the crystal here. On the right-hand side of this crystal are wooden objects. Destroy them. The path is blocked for now but this is where you are supposed to go later.
  • Head up the stairs and take a U-turn to climb another flight of stairs. Destroy the crystal here.
  • Destroy two more crystals on your way downstairs in succession.
  • Now, look ahead of you, there will be a building slightly on the left (in the center, if you are looking objectively). Enter it and smash the crystal inside.
  • Come out and smash the leftover crystals in succession as they become vulnerable one by one until you have unlocked the small archway behind the wooden objects that we mentioned earlier.

The Final Boss Fight

Once you enter through the small archway, there is another archway downstairs blocked by a blue screen. Use Bellara’s obstacle ability to get past it. There will be an Activate prompt near a wall that will trigger a boss fight against Consuming Obsession.

It raises its hand to inflict multiple lightning strikes on the ground in quick succession. They have an AoE but don’t ‘linger’. Dodge them freely. Don’t get too close while attacking because it will launch another small AoE attack. However, don’t get too far either because it also has a ranged attack where it aims and delivers two magical slashes. Your party members will warn you before an attack if you fail to see the visual cues.

Defeat the boss, pick up the rare/epic loot, read the note, and head back to Bastian where the quest started. This will wrap up An Academic Interest for you. You will gain 100 Mourn Watch strength apart from 200 Gold and 5 Fade-Touched Ore.
