A fence can be crafted with wood of any kind. You’ll need:
- 4 Wooden Planks: Chop down trees and place the logs in a crafting grid to turn them into wooden planks. Any type of wood works—oak, spruce, birch, acacia, jungle, dark oak, etc. However, all the wood used to craft a single unit of fence should be of the same variety, as it will create a fence matching the wood’s color.
- 2 Sticks: You can make sticks by placing two wooden planks vertically in a crafting grid. Two planks produce four sticks.
Fence Crafting Recipe
Once you’ve gathered your materials, follow this pattern in the crafting table:
- Middle Row: Wood Plank | Stick | Wood Plank
- Bottom Row: Wood Plank | Stick | Wood Plank
This layout yields three fence pieces. You can repeat the process as many times as needed, depending on how much fencing you want to place. To craft a Nether brick fence, substitute the planks for Nether brick blocks and the sticks for Nether bricks.
How To Use Fence in Minecraft
Fences have a unique functionality that allows them to stop mobs from jumping over them because their collision box is 1.5 blocks high. Most mobs and the player can only jump 1 block by default, making fences a good deterrent. Here are some uses and tips for fences in Minecraft:
- Animal Pens: Keep livestock like cows, sheep, pigs, or chickens from wandering off. You can lure them into a fenced area by using the food that they like.
- Fence Gate: Install a fence gate in your fence to allow easy access. Refer to the fence crafting recipe, but switch the positions of the sticks and planks.
- Bottom and Middle row: Stick | Wood Plank | Stick.
- Mob Defense: Zombies, skeletons, and creepers can’t jump fences, making them great for perimeter defense around your base. You will still have to watch out for spiders.
- Decoration: Combine fences with lanterns or flower pots to create stylish garden paths or street lamps. Place a pressure plate or slab on top of a fence to make a convincing side table.
- Carpet trick: If you place a carpet on top of a fence, mobs still can’t jump over—but you can. Use the trick to create easy in-and-out access to pens without needing gates.
