Lighting is crucial in Minecraft—not just to create a pleasant environment and build style but also to keep mobs away. While torches do the job in the early game, a redstone lamp brings a more refined look to your base and creates a pleasant light source. These lamps can be toggled on and off, making them a neat addition to one’s home, even if you aren’t into elaborate redstone-powered builds. Here’s how to craft one and take full advantage of its features.

Ingredients for Crafting a Redstone Lamp in Minecraft

To make a redstone Lamp, you’ll need two key materials:

  • Redstone Dust: Redstone ore is easy to find underground at iron and deepslate levels. Mine the ore with an iron pickaxe or better, and it will drop redstone dust. One block yields several pieces, so a single trip can provide enough for multiple lamps.
  • Glowstone Block: Found in the Nether, glowstone appears on the ceilings of the fiery dimension. Mining glowstone normally will drop several pieces of glowstone dust—you’ll need four of those to craft one block if you’re not using the Silk Touch enchantment. Placing four glowstone dust in a square shape in a crafting grid will create one glowstone block.

To craft the redstone lamp:

  • Place the glowstone block in the center slot of the crafting table.
  • Surround it with redstone dust on the top, bottom, left, and right (diamond shape).

This will give you one redstone lamp, ready to be powered on.

Redstone lamps work similarly to electrical lights. They only turn on when powered by a redstone signal. If you plan to have them on at all times, you can place a redstone torch under it or an adjacent opaque block. Any active redstone wires configured to point toward it will light it up. Redstone lamps function like other redstone mechanisms. Here are some features and tips for the redstone lamp:

  • A redstone lamp emits a block light level of 15, compared to a torch’s light level of 14.
  • Using a daylight sensor with redstone lamps can create an automatic outdoor lighting system that only turns on at night—great for street lamps or pathways.
    • Place a daylight sensor in the open, with a redstone wire leading to the redstone lamp’s power source (redstone torch). The redstone torch will turn off (inverted signal) upon receiving the signal and turn back on when the daylight sensor powers off at night.
  • You can connect multiple redstone lamps to a single lever using redstone wires and repeaters to have a manual off and on switch for lights.
