Chains are a versatile decorative block in Minecraft that spawn in a select few regions but have an array of possibilities in the player’s hands. You may have come across chains while exploring abandoned mineshafts or seen them suspending blocks from the ceiling in bastions and bastion remnants within the Nether. Chains can be mined or crafted. They can be placed vertically, horizontally, and even underwater.
Chain Crafting Ingredients
To create chains on the crafting table, you will require iron ingots and iron nuggets. Iron ingots are smelted in the furnace from iron ore, which is found underground. 9 iron nuggets can be crafted by placing 1 iron ingot in a crafting grid.
Chain Crafting Recipe in Minecraft
After collecting the ingredients, head over to a crafting table. Place an iron ingot in the center of the crafting grid with 1 iron nugget above it and 1 below it. Upon placing the ingredients correctly, 1 iron ingot and 2 iron nuggets will produce 1 block of chain. This means that each piece of chain is worth 1.22 iron ingots, which can be quite costly for the early game.
How to Use Chains in Minecraft
Chains can be placed on any solid block surface using the right click (use button) and will align themselves based on the surface. If you place a chain on the top surface of a block, it will be placed vertically, and more chains can be placed on top of the first to extend it.
If placed on the side surface of a block, the chain will be placed horizontally. Placing any block below a vertically hanging chain will give it the appearance of being suspended, making for an authentic-looking decoration. Here are some examples of decorating using chains:
- Hanging lanterns, soul lanterns, potted plants, and banners.
- Crafting hanging signs.
- Place chains in the top left and top right corners of the crafting grid. Fill the two bottom rows with stripped logs. Get stripped logs by right-clicking logs with an axe.
- Chains can serve as see-through bridges, as you can walk across horizontal chains.
- Creating an anchor for a ship.
- Suspending illuminating blocks like glowstone from the ceiling to create a chandelier effect.
- Attach chains from levers to increase the complexity of suspended decor.
- Creating suspension bridges by using chains horizontally.
