A quick-to-make Minecraft food, mushroom stew offers decent saturation using just two mushrooms and a bowl—no furnace required.

Two varieties of mushrooms can be combined in Minecraft to make a nutritious stew that heals you during your adventure. Due to the presence of mushrooms in nearly every biome, knowing how to craft mushroom stew can provide a reliable source of healing and hunger replenishment in Survival mode.
Eating one mushroom stew restores 6 hunger (3 drumsticks worth) and provides 7.2 hunger saturation, which is relatively high for plant-based foods in the game. Furthermore, the dish requires no cooking and can be crafted in your inventory with common ingredients. The only downside? Mushroom stew can’t be stacked. But there are ways to minimize that drawback using the tips given below.
Mushroom Stew Crafting Ingredients

To craft Mushroom Stew, you will need one bowl, a red mushroom, and a brown mushroom. Four bowls are crafted by making a “v” in the crafting grid with three wood planks of any kind, as seen in the picture above.
Brown mushrooms and red mushrooms can spawn in nearly any biome on nearly any block as long as they aren’t in direct sunlight. They even thrive in the Nether! Brown mushrooms are more common, with a 25% spawn chance when conditions are met. Red mushrooms are twice as rare, with a 12.5% spawn rate. However, once you have one, it can be easily farmed using bone meal.
Right-clicking a red or brown mushroom with bone meal has a 40% chance to spawn a Huge Mushroom of the corresponding variety. Mining the canopy of the huge mushroom will yield roughly 13 mushrooms of its type.
Mushroom Stew Crafting Recipe

To craft a mushroom stew, place the bowl in a crafting grid with one brown mushroom and one red mushroom in any arrangement. Once you eat the mushroom stew, the bowl will be returned to your inventory.
Mushroom Stew from Mooshroom
Another way to obtain mushroom stew is to milk a mooshroom with a bowl. Right click (use button) a mooshroom while holding a bowl to receive mushroom stew. However, mooshrooms only spawn in the rare mushroom fields biome, making it difficult to procure for regular mushroom stew production.
Best Uses of Mushroom Stew in Minecraft
Mushroom stew’s renewability and the general availability of its ingredients can help overcome its stacking issue. Instead of making as many mushroom stews as you can, carry both mushroom types and one or two bowls with you. When required, craft the mushroom stew in the inventory.
Since mushrooms are nearly universal in their availability, you can have mushroom stew as an emergency food if you run out of other food items. All you need is to gather the two varieties of mushrooms and three planks to craft bowls. All these ingredients are even available in the Nether, where other varieties of food are scarce.
Suspicious Stew
You can enhance your mushroom stew recipe by adding a flower to it and making it a suspicious stew. While crafting, place the required flower anywhere on the crafting grid alongside the mushroom stew ingredients. However, using random flowers can cause negative effects. Here are all the flowers with positive effects you should know about:
- Allium (magenta) – Grants Fire Resistance for 3 seconds.
- Blue Orchid (light blue) and Dandelion (yellow) – Increase saturation, which reduces how quickly you will get hungry again.
- Cornflower (blue) – 5-second jump boost.
- Oxeye Daisy (white) – Health regeneration for 7 seconds.
- Poppy (red) and Torchflower (orange) – 4 and 5 seconds of Night vision, respectively.
