After a decade-long hiatus, Dragon Age is back, and players can once again traverse the lands of Thedas with the latest entry in the series, Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The game amplifies all the RPG aspects that you have come to expect and love from Dragon Age, including narrative, combat, and, most importantly, a sense of progression. It allows you to experience the latter through constant upgrades, either for your character or your gear. Dragon Age: The Veilguard supplements these upgrades through Heartwood and other upgrade materials that can be found scattered across the map. However, there are no ways to farm the material, which is instead dropped during quests in the game.

This guide will go over Heartwood and where you can find it in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Where to Find Heartwood?

Playing through quests should keep you sufficiently stocked up on Heartwood (Source: Bioware)

Do Your Quests

Heartwood is an upgrade material that can be used to upgrade item rarity, gear, faction vendors, and more. It can be obtained as a reward for completing the main and side quests in the game. Furthermore, you can find these items placed on the ground during these quests. As you explore quest-designated areas, keep your eyes on the ground for the shiny items.

Break the Crates

The most common way of obtaining these items is through breaking crates. As you go about exploring areas, you will notice bundles of crates and barrels piled and stocked up against walls. Simply roll through these crates to break them. These crates or barrels will then drop Heartwood, along with other upgrade materials for you to pick up. These crates are found in abundance during several quests in the game.

Buy Heartwood From Vendors

You can also buy Heartwood from any of Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s faction vendors spread across the map. The upgrade material can be bought in exchange for gold from any of these vendors. You can then use the Heartwood to upgrade your gear.

While seemingly convenient, as you do not have to go out and explore, we recommend against buying Heartwood from vendors as it is purchased in exchange for gold. Gold is an extremely valuable commodity, and we do not recommend spending the currency on something as abundant as Heartwood. Simply taking on the game’s quests should be enough to keep you stocked up to cruise through most of the game.
