How To Find and Use a Sponge in Minecraft

Sponges are rare Minecraft blocks that absorb water, making them especially useful for building underwater bases and clearing flooded areas.

Ever thought of making an underwater base in Minecraft? If you try it, you’ll come across two main issues. The first is having to surface for air every minute. The second is getting rid of vast quantities of water once you have made the structure. The first issue can be solved with bubble columns, a potion, or enchantments, and the second, with sponges.

Sponges are a rare item in Minecraft that you are unlikely to come across in regular exploration. They are exclusive to Ocean Monuments, massive underwater structures made of prismarine. Here are the two main ways to get sponges:

  • Defeat Guardians and Elder Guardians:
These mobs spawn inside Ocean Monuments. Guardians and Elder Guardians are likely to drop sponges upon death. Since there are several Guardians and three Elder Guardians per monument, you can reliably get sponges this way.
  • Sponge rooms:
Some Ocean Monuments contain special rooms filled with wet sponges (usually 15–30). They can be mined if you manage to get rid of the Mining Fatigue effect generated by Elder Guardians.

You’ll need a decent underwater strategy to access these monuments safely. Using a Water Breathing Potion or wearing a Turtle Shell as a Helmet can fix the primary issue of breathing underwater. Since the Elder Guardians afflict Mining Fatigue III within the Ocean Monument, you will have to defeat them before collecting sponges. You can also drink a milk bucket to briefly remove Mining Fatigue and gather the sponges quickly. Use a hoe to mine sponges faster.

Dry Wet Sponges

When you collect sponges, they will be in their wet forms. These do not absorb water, and you will have to dry them out first. Turn a wet sponge into a normal sponge by:

  • Smelting it in a furnace.
  • Placing it in the open in a dry biome for a few minutes or in the Nether for an instant.

Use Sponges to Remove Water

Place a dry sponge in an area with water by right-clicking (use button). It will immediately absorb water blocks within a 7-block octahedron, centered around itself (up to a limit of 65 blocks). After use, sponges become wet and can be dried again, making them a reusable resource.
