Gandrel’s Aspiration is a crossbow with advantage against Monstrosities, and you can get it during Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3).
Gandrel’s Aspiration
In Baldur’s Gate 3 Gandrel’s Aspiration is a Heavy Crossbow that is a great early-game ranged weapon for doing extra damage to monsters. The main perk, Feller of Monsters, grants you automatic Advantage whenever you fire it against Monstrosity type enemies. Monstrosities are described as “Frightening creatures that are not ordinary, not truly natural, and almost never benign.”
Monstrosity creatures include, but are not limited to:
- Bulette
- Gremishka
- Gnoll
- Harpy
- Hook Horror
- Minotaur
- Phase Spider
All of these are enemies you will face in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3 and therefore Gandrel’s Aspiration is a good starting ranged weapon for Rangers, Fighters, Paladins, Clerics and Bards.

How to Get Gandrel’s Aspiration in Baldur’s Gate 3
To get Gandrel’s Aspiration in Baldur’s Gate 3 you need to find the Gur Hunter named Gandrel outside of the Riverside Teahouse in the Sunlit Wetlands during Act 1. The Sunlit Wetlands can be found to the south of the Act 1 map, and to get there you will have to head west across the bridge towards the Blighted Village and then follow the path south down around the village. Then continue south into the Wetlands.
Gandrel can be found in a separate alcove just to the south of the location of the Riverside Teahouse. He’s a Gur Hunter, which means he hunts monsters, and his current target is a certain vampire spawn who may or may not be traveling with you. Furthermore, if you bring Astarion along in your party it contributes to a more entertaining conversation.
Gandrel is technically a trader if you stay on his good side, but he doesn’t have any great gear. His inventory is made up of basic supplies you can get elsewhere. Unfortunately for him, his personal crossbow is a much better deal. As soon as he founds out you’re harboring a vampire spawn he’ll attack, and at the end of the fight you can loot Gandrel’s Aspiration.
