How to Get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy in Baldur’s Gate 3
To obtain the Staff of Cherished Necromancy, you must destroy Mystic Carrion’s heart that is in possession of Thrumbo, so he becomes vulnerable to permanent death, and kill him, which is part of Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant quest located in the Philgrave Mansion (X:10, Y:160).
To get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy in BG3, follow these steps during Act 3 in Baldur’s Gate:
- Enter Baldur’s Gate through the Basilisk Gate.
- Head west to find a remarkable building – Sorcerous Sundries.
- Turn left, heading south until you reach Philgrave Mansion (X:10, Y:160) along the water.
- On the west side of the building, you must pass an automatic perception check to unveil the hidden door.
- Unclok the Door and step inside.
- Mystic Carrion waits in the next room.
- Speak with him, and you can check his wares and pick up the Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant quest, required to get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy.
- If you choose to help Thrumbo and learn the Mystic Carrion’s immortality secret, you can destroy his heart.
- Come back to Philgrave Mansion and kill Mystic Carrion.
- Loot the Staff of Cherished Necromancy from his body.
Find the Mystic Carrion in Philgrave Mansion
In Baldur’s Gate City, during Act 3, find Philgrave Mansion (X:10, Y:160) the Mansion, situated south of Sorcerous Sundries, along the waterfront. The nearest waypoint, Heapside Strand, offers quick access to your destination.
Upon arrival, you’ll overhear NPCs complaining about a terrible odor and notice the absence of a conventional entrance to the mansion. Save the game and take the stairs on the right side of the building. Your characters will pass an automatic Perception check, unveiling a hidden stone door in the wall. If, by any chance, your entire party fails this skill check, you can reload the save and try again.
You’ll need to pass a 20 DC Dexterity check to unlock the door, so make sure you have a character like Rogue, Ranger, or Astarion. Alternatively, you can use a weapon with bludgeoning damage to forcefully break through the wall.
Start the Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant Quest
Inside, you’ll encounter Mystic Carrion, a unique merchant with a unique attitude look and impressive staff in his hands – Staff of Cherished Necromancy. Start a conversation with him, where you can trade and acquire the Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant quest. He will ask you to find his “lazy undead servant,” Thrumbo. You need to complete the quest to get the staff. However, if you decide to fulfill the necromancer’s request, you’ll receive the Crypt Lord Ring but not the staff. The only way to get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) is to discover Mystic Carrion’s immortality secret, kill him, and obtain the stuff from his body.
Find Thrumbo
From Mystic Carrion, you’ll learn that three more of his undead servants escaped, and they may know where Thrumbo is. Zombies with the clues can be found in the following locations:
- Strange Beggar Morbus
- Strange Beggar Lumbar
- Strange Beggar Sacrum
You can search for zombies scattered around the city or head straight to the Thrumbo location in the beach house northeast of the Philgrave Mansion in the Voynan’s Home (X: -55 Y: -121). The escaping zombie is hiding inside the wardrobe. As soon as you interact with it, he’ll start a conversation with you, trying to convince you that Mystic Carrion is the one you should stop. He’ll also explain that a necromancer can somehow bring himself back even if you kill him, and to kill him permanently, you must learn how he is doing it. Your second set of choices will look like this:
- That’s horrible. All right, I’ll help you. What can I do? – Note: This option will give you Staff of Cherished Necromancy and Crypt Lord Ring
- Do you know how Carrion brought himself back?
- Quite the story. Now, will you die quietly, or are we doing this the hard way? – Note: This option will result in receiving only the Crypt Lord Ring or Staff of Cherished Necromancy
To get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy, you must kill Mystic Carrion, and the task just becomes more complicated, so choose the first option if you want to help Thrumbo and get a lot of gold in the process.
Deliver Thrumbo’s Body to Mystic Carrion
Alternatively, you can pick the third option: kill Thrumbo, destroy the heart, and return to Philgrave Mansion to kill the necromancer. Pick up the Staff of Cherished Necromancy from Mystic Carrion and conclude the quest. However, you won’t receive the Crypt Lord Ring by picking this method. Let’s assume you will take the longer path and help Thrumbo.
Discover Mystic Carrion’s Secret of Immortality
The secret to the necromancer’s Immortality is buried deep within his layer underneath the city. To get there, find one of many Baldur’s Gate Sewers entrances. Three notable are a ladder north of Basilisk Gate, through the Emperor’s Hideout in Elfsong Tavern, or the trapdoor in Flymm Cargo near the docks (check the map for reference). Regardless of what entrance to City Sewers you’ll pick, you must find the passage in the northwest corner of the map just next to the Undercity Ruins fat travel waypoint.
Once you step inside and pass a Slight of Hand dexterity check to unlock the door to the necromancer’s hideout, it’s time to prepare for the fight. The Ancient Lair is filled with glided chests, gold, zombies, and other undead servants of Mystic Carrion. They will attack when you interact with any object, so be prepared. After the fight, look for another concealed door on the room’s right wall. Upon approaching, your party will pass an automatic perception check to reveal the passage.
Inside, you will find some more items: Mystic Carrion’s liver and the brain, but no heart. However, from the Funerary Jar Form and Function book on the table in the corner (X:-1395 Y:85), you can learn that the necromancer is hiding the jars that grant him immortality inside his zombies, and that is probably the reason why he wants Thrumbo back but doesn’t care for his other zombies on the run. Comeback to Thrumbo with the news.
Get the Jar with Mystic Carrion’s Heart from Thrumbo
Return to Thrumbo and explain what you learn, suprisingly he will spit the jar and the heart, allowing you to add it to your inventory. Now, you must destroy the heart to kill Mystic Carrion permanently. The heart will explode, so place it in the same area, move a few septs away, and blow it with any spell or range attack. Now it’s time to face the necromancer.
Kill Mystic Carrion and get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy
Once more, visit Philgrave Mansion (X:10, Y:160). Upon arriving, Mystic Carrion and his undead servants will attack you. It’s a difficult fight where your opponent will cast the Cloudkill, an area effect poison damage, and his ghouls will try to frighten or immobilize your party. I advise you to focus on Mystic Carrion first and defeat him immediately. For his undead, you can use any AoE effects. They should stack nicely for you to kill them. After the fight, loot the Staff of Cherished Necromancy from Mystic Carrion. Also, Thrumbo and his zombie friends will arrive and reward you with the Crypt Lord Ring. That’s all you need to know about the Staff of Cherished Necromancy in BG3!
