What is The Baneful in BG3?

BG3 The Baneful

The Baneful shortsword, which can be purchased from Blurg in the Underdark, is a weapon specifically designed for a certain class and subclasses/race combination. A character will only receive the bonuses on this weapon if it is Bound to an Eldritch Knight or is a Warlock’s Pact Weapon. For Warlocks this means that at Level 3 they must choose Pact of the Blade in order to gain the ability to Bind a Pact Weapon.

However, you should also be aware that this weapon is a Shortsword and as such falls under the Marital Weapon proficiency which all Fighters have access to, but the Warlock class does not. In order to have proficiency with this weapon as a Warlock you will need to be playing that class as a certain race that has Shortsword Proficiency: Drow, Elf, or Githyanki.

How to Get The Baneful in BG3? Explained

You can purchase The Baneful from a hobgoblin vendor named Blurg who is at the Myconid Colony in the Underdark. There are several ways to get into the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3, but probably the shortest way to get to Blurg is to use the Well found in the Blighted Village. In order to take this route at least one of your characters will need to pass a DC10 Intelligence check in order for the well to become visible. There will be a cavern like area below where you will find lots of spider enemies. The biggest threat is the Phase Spider Matriach you can choose to fight or attempt to avoid.

You’ll then be looking for the Whispering Depth waypoint, which almost directly to the west. Nearby you should see an open chasm. Cast Feather Fall or consume a Feather Fall potion BEFORE jumping in. Doing so will let you float safely down into the Underdark. Once you land on your feet, head northwest and you should find the Myconid Colony. If you can pass a DC 5 Charisma check in order to convince them that you mean no harm, they’ll let you visit. You’ll find Blurg just a little to the north of the Colony waypoint.

The very first time you speak to Blurg there will be some story dialogue and an interesting character to meet. The conversation will end automatically, but you can immediately click to speak to Blurg again and get the option to ask if he has anything interesting to trade.

How to Use The Baneful in BG3?

The best way to use The Baneful in BG3 is by equipping it to an Eldritch Knight Fighter and using the Weapon Bond class action you receive at Level 3 to bind the sword to you. This will then grant your character access to all of the passive bonuses and benefits the sword offers.

Moreover, while Warlocks can also bind this sword with Pact Weapon, they do not have Martial Weapon proficiency. Therefore, you would have to use one of your feats to take Moderately Armoured to gain this proficiency.
