Choose the new Patch 8 Giant Barbarian subclass to kick enemies hard and knock them back in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has a number of abilities that can be used to introduce enemies to the wonders of fall damage. The most common one is Shove, which takes a bonus action and pushes the target back after a successful contested Athletics roll. Thunderous Smite and Gust of Wind involve the use of spell slots to knock back enemies. But what about a good old-fashioned Spartan kick to pull a Leonidas on your enemies?
For the longest time, shove was the closest thing to kicking targets off a ledge in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, with the game’s Patch 8 update, Larian is introducing a subclass that can kick enemies using an ability and send them sailing across the battlefield. And the real kicker, it’s a major upgrade over Shove.
Kicking Enemies in Baldur’s Gate 3

To kick your enemies in Baldur’s Gate 3, pick the Barbarian class and the Path of Giants subclass. At level five, you will unlock Boot of the Giants, which allows you to kick enemies 1.5m (5ft) away after a contested Athletics roll. Compared to Shove, Boot of the Giants can kick enemies that are twice as heavy. Here are some key points about the ability:
- Unlocked at level 5 Path of Giants.
- Costs a bonus action, no limit to per-turn usage.
- Deals 1 unarmed Bludgeoning damage + Strength modifier.
- Pushes the target back 1.5m (5ft).
- Weight of the target must be less than the Strength score × Multiplier (24).
Best Way to Use Boot of the Giants in Baldur’s Gate 3

To increase the damage dealt by Boot of the Giants, the Tavern Brawler feat is a must-have. A Barbarian will generally have a high Strength modifier, and Tavern Brawler doubles it for unarmed attacks. Since Boot of the Giants is an unarmed attack, Tavern Brawler will apply. Having Giant’s Rage active will increase unarmed damage by two Bludgeoning (by three Bludgeoning at level 9). Then, the damage done by Boot of Giants while Giant’s Rage is active will be:
- 1 Bludgeoning + 2-3 (Giant’s Rage) + 2 x Strength modifier
If your barbarian is at level 5 with a strength modifier of four, the damage for Boot of the Giants with Tavern Brawler and Giant’s Rage will be:
- 1 + 2 (Giant’s Rage) + 4 (Strength modifier) + 4 (Tavern Brawler) = 11
Thus, a Path of Giants Barbarian with the Tavern Brawler feat can rely on Boot of the Giants to consistently deal damage using a bonus action while knocking enemies back in style. Wearing Gloves of Crushing will enhance the ability further, dealing an additional +2 Bludgeoning. The Reduce and Enlarge spells have no effect on the Boot of the Giants.
