Before you can actually start lockpicking in the world of Oblivion, you will need to find lockpicks. Make sure to have some extra in your inventory since they break on one wrong move; they’re quite sensitive. You can find lockpicks by looting enemy bodies and in chests hidden throughout the world. After you have enough of them, you can now find a chest or a door you want to unlock without alerting the masses.
Once you interact with the lock, you will have to line up the tumblers perfectly before pressing space. Every lock relies on RNG, ranging from one to five tumblers that you will have to level. Move your mouse to place the lockpick and click to send the tumbler up. As it reaches the top, press the spacebar instantly before it slides down.
Repeat the process for other tumblers if there are any, and voila! You have broken the lock. However, if you fail even on one tumbler, you will have to restart the process from the ground up.
