Learn how to craft a bucket in Minecraft, gather the required materials, and unlock its many practical uses.

Beyond the flashy weapons and armor, the core experience of Minecraft is facilitated by its versatile tools that allow you to bend the very landscape to your will. Among the most useful tools you can craft early in the game is the humble bucket.
It might not seem impressive, but a bucket’s versatility makes it essential whether you’re gathering water, handling lava, or creating a portal to the Nether. If you’re just getting started or revisiting the game, this guide breaks down how to craft a bucket and why it should never be missing from your inventory.
Ingredients for Crafting a Bucket in Minecraft
To craft a bucket, you’ll need three iron ingots. That’s it—just three, but getting them requires a little effort. Here’s how:
- Iron Ore: First, locate iron ore blocks, which can be found between levels Y=16 and Y=54. Mine the ore using a stone pickaxe (or better). Exploring caves and underground mineshafts is a quick way to find a lot of iron ore.
- Smelting Iron Ore: Smelt the iron ore in a furnace using any fuel—coal, wood, charcoal—to get iron ingots.
Bucket Crafting Recipe

Once you have your three iron ingots, open a crafting table. Arrange the ingots in a “V” shape on the grid:
- One ingot in the center-left slot.
- One in the center-right slot.
- One in the bottom-center slot.
This layout crafts one empty bucket, ready for use.
Bucket Uses in Minecraft

Buckets are surprisingly multifunctional in Minecraft. Approach lava, water, or powder snow and right-click (use button) on the block to collect it. You will have a bucket filled with the collected liquid. You can place it on a block by right-clicking, which empties the bucket once more.
- Water Transport: Use it to move water from one location to another—handy for farming, creating waterfalls, and channels for boats.
- Lava Collection: Buckets can hold lava, which doubles as an excellent fuel source in furnaces. You will get an empty bucket back when the lava is consumed.
- Milking Cows: Right-click a cow with an empty bucket to collect milk, which removes potion effects and is also used for crafting cake.
- Powder Snow: Buckets can collect powder snow found in snowy biomes.
- Fish Catching: Use a water bucket on fish like Tropical Fish or on an axolotl to create your own aquarium or transport them to new locations.
- MLG: Save yourself from fall damage with a water bucket by placing water below you just before hitting the ground. It’s tricky, but lifesaving once mastered.
