Minecraft’s survival, combat, and exploration are complemented by a food and potion brewing system that adds depth to gameplay by enabling players to heal and gain buffs. Sugar may not seem like the most essential item in the beginning, but it becomes an important ingredient within these systems for several effective and unique items. Here’s how you can gather the materials, craft sugar, and put it to use in your Minecraft world.

Sugar Crafting Ingredients

To make sugar, you’ll need one of two ingredients: sugar cane or honey bottles.

  • Sugar Cane: This is the most common source. Sugar cane typically grows near bodies of water, like rivers or lakes, on grass, sand, or dirt blocks. You can harvest it by breaking the bottom stalk, but be sure to save a few to replant and grow more. It grows till three blocks high and is farmable in nearly any biome. Just plant it by a source of water near your base.
  • Honey Bottle: Less common—this comes from beehives. You’ll need a glass bottle and a beehive or bee nest full of honey. Right-click the hive with a bottle to collect honey. Place a campfire or another block of fire beneath the beehive or risk an attack by angry bees.

Sugar Crafting Recipe

Making sugar is a simple process once you have the ingredients. Open your crafting table or inventory crafting menu, and place either:

  • One sugar cane to make one sugar.
  • One honey bottle to create three pieces of sugar.

You can place the items in any slot of the crafting grid since it is a shapeless recipe.

Once you have sugar, you can use it to make food and brewing items.

  • Cake: The cake is a unique food item since it can be placed and eaten as a block. Combine two pieces of sugar with milk buckets, an egg, and wheat to make a cake. Making a cake will unlock ‘The Lie’ achievement.
  • Pumpkin Pie: Combine a single piece of sugar with a pumpkin and an egg to craft a pumpkin pie.
  • Potion of Swiftness: Add sugar to an awkward potion using a brewing stand to make a potion that increases running and sprinting speed.
  • Fermented Spider Eye: Combine a brown mushroom and a piece of sugar with a spider eye on the crafting grid to make a fermented spider eye. This item can be used to brew a variety of potions.
  • Feeding Horses: Although inefficient, sugar can help tame horses and heal them by 1 health point.
