Shields in Dragon Age or any action RPG have always been relegated to defensive roles, but not in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. While yes, you can still use the Shield to block attacks and projectiles, in The Veilguard, it can also be used offensively. The Shield is an off-hand weapon that’s exclusive to the Warrior class. Although the weapon is meant to be used defensively and to parry incoming attacks, you can also throw it toward enemies to deal a ton of damage. The aptly named “Shield Toss” ability makes Shields in Dragon Age: The Veilguard quite appealing, even for players who might not want to invest fully into a melee-only build.

The Shield Toss ability allows you to charge your Shield, throw it at enemies, and call it back. It’s somewhat akin to the Leviathan Axe in God of War (2018) and Ragnarok, albeit with the ability to also block incoming attacks. However, despite the ability’s significance in a Warrior playstyle, Shield Toss isn’t something that the game tutorializes. As such, some players might find figuring out Shield Toss a bit tricky. Here’s a comprehensive guide on the Shield Toss ability, how to perform it, best use cases, and more.

How To Do a Shield Toss in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?

To perform a Shield Toss, you must have a Shield and a Sword equipped as your primary weapons. With the Shield in your off-hand, press block (LB or L1). While holding the block button, press RT or R2 on your controller to charge your Shield for a throw. As soon as you release RT or R2, the Shield will go flying toward enemies and quickly return back to you. Shield Toss usually deals a moderate amount of damage. However, you can press and hold RT or R2 to charge the throw, which deals significantly more damage. Shield Toss is an excellent ranged option for the Warrior class. Furthermore, it also acts as an excellent crowd-control option.

Additionally, you can also deal elemental damage with Shield Toss. However, to do so, you will need to invest heavily in the Warrior’s Reaper Specialization. The only downside to using the Shield Toss is that during the animation, it leaves the Rook vulnerable to attacks. Unlike parrying, Shield Toss doesn’t have any invincibility frames (i frames). As such, you would want to be careful while performing Shield Throw to avoid getting blindsided by enemy attacks.

Best Use Cases for Shield Toss in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

The Shield Toss is best used against regular enemy hordes. Apart from raw or elemental damage, Shield Toss also deals knockback to enemies. As such, you might find it incredibly useful when faced with hordes of enemies. A fully charged Shield Toss deals a significant amount of knockback, giving you ample breathing room to follow it up with another ability or retreat to heal yourself. Furthermore, Shield Toss can also be used during boss fights to chip away at the enemy’s stagger bar while your party abilities are on a cooldown.
