Masterworking is an end-game affix enhancement system for gears—introduced in Loot Reborn, season 4 of Diablo 4. It is one of the most important mechanisms of Diablo 4, as it greatly improves equipment by raising existing affixes, rather than adding new ones. While it may seem similar to Tempering, both serve different functions.

To access this game-changing feature, players must complete some prerequisites and expend valuable resources. This guide provides a complete overview of the Masterworking system in Diablo 4, including how to unlock and use it.

How To Unlock Masterworking in Diablo 4?

Although Masterworking offers a significant boost to your builds, unlocking it requires some effort. Once you reach World Tier 4, complete a Tier 46 Nightmare Dungeon to unlock the Pit of the Artificer quest. This grants you access to The Pit, an endgame dungeon.

Finishing the first run of The Pit unlocks the Masterworking feature. Additionally, if you are aiming for a greater challenge, complete The Pit of the Artificer Tier 20 to unlock Torment 1 difficulty, which offers tougher challenges along with greater rewards.

What Is Masterworking and How It Works in Diablo 4?

Once the Masterworking is available, interact with the Blacksmith NPC to access the feature. Only fully tempered Ancestral Legendary or Unique gear can be masterworked. Selecting the gear will display the type of upgrade and the cost. You also need Obducite, Ingolith, and Neathiron, exclusive materials found in The Pit, to masterwork an item. Items can be Masterworked up to 12 ranks.

While most ranks increase all affixes of the gear by 5%, ranks 4, 8, and 12 increase a random affix by 25%. If you are not satisfied with the 25% boost on a specific affix, you can also choose to reset the Masterwork rank to zero. This helps to enhance the affixes of a gear that suits your build. However, resetting doesn’t refund the expended materials.
