This guide explains how to unlock Torment 1 in Diablo 4, the next difficulty tier after Expert and Penitent, introduced in the Vessel of Hatred expansion.

The Vessel of Hatred is the first expansion of Blizzard Entertainment’s action RPG Diablo 4. The expansion revamped several base game mechanics, such as removing the World Tiers and adding new difficulty levels. While leveling up, players can choose between Normal, Hard, Expert, and Penitent difficulty levels, with the latter two, unlocked after completing the base game and DLC campaigns.
Now, the expansion introduces four new end-game difficulties—Torment 1, 2, 3, and 4, ensuring greater rewards for those who take on higher challenges. However, unlocking the Torment 1 difficulty in Diablo 4 is no easy task and requires considerable effort.

What Is Torment 1 Difficulty in Diablo 4?
The Torment tier difficulties begin with Torment 1 and progress further with Torment 2, 3, and 4. The jump from Penitent to Torment 1 is significant, offering increased gold, experience, and greater loot. The Torment 1 difficulty contains new items and activities while granting 300% more gold and experience. It also rewards Ancestral-quality items and gear, the highest tier of gear in the game.
Although the previous difficulties offer Legendary, Unique, and Mythic Unique items, Torment 1 increases the drop rate for these rarities. However, greater rewards come with higher risks, as you will receive a debuff of armor reduction by 250 and a 25% reduction in resistance while playing on Torment 1. These debuffs will become more severe for the higher Torment difficulty tiers.

How To Unlock Torment 1 Difficulty in Diablo 4

You can unlock Torment 1 difficulty by conquering Tier 20 of “The Pit of the Artificer” (or “The Pit”) at Level 60, which is now the max level cap. You can access the Pit of the Artificer dungeon by finding the Artificer’s Obelisk at Cerrigar in Scosglen.
The Pit is a procedurally generated dungeon, offering a new experience for every run. Completing Level 20 of The Pit of the Artificer grants access to Torment 1 difficulty. You can continue grinding The Pit further to unlock higher Torment levels:
- Torment I: Pit Level 20
- Torment II: Pit Level 35
- Torment III: Pit Level 50
- Torment IV: Pit Level 65
You don’t have to do The Pit dungeons solo, as you can also bring your friends to complete the dungeon, making the grinding a lot more fun and easier.
