Werner is a member of the Astrum Unit led by Olivia, another fellow hunter and a canonical NPC in the game. You can unlock Werner as a Hunting Assistant by completing his specific side mission, though that appears in the later stages of the game. Steps To Unlock Werner As Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds
You will need to complete the Werner’s Test Run side mission to unlock Werner as a Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Werner’s Test Run Side Mission Details
You will get this mission after completing the main story of Monster Hunter Wilds. The mission will be initiated by Werner himself, who you can find in the Ruins of Wyveria Base Camp. The Astrum Unit Smithy will mention how he has a new device this time, something that uses the property of Wyvern Milk. To that extent, Werner wants you to help him test this new device.
Once you accept this mission, Werner will accompany you to a Guardian Doshaguma hunt. You will see an optional objective here that will tell you to lure the monster near Werner. It is suggested that you do, since you will be able to see his new device in action. Essentially, this is a small device that can shoot exploding flares before exploding like a Barrel Bomb. To activate this device, you simply need to shoot it with your slinger.
The Guardian Doshaguma will take some damage from this device, and you can continue the rest of the hunt normally. Once completed, come back to the base and talk to Werner. Once all of this is completed, you will unlock Werner as a Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds.
What Does Werner Do as a Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds?
As a Hunting Assistant, Werner can put up the same Wyvern Milk device in Monster Hunter Wilds. You can use this device multiple times, till it is exhausted or the monster destroys it. Generally, one hit from a large monster instantly destroys this device.
Unfortunately, you cannot manually choose a Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds. This is a random event, and the NPC might sometimes pop up during hunts to help you out. In the occasion he does appear, Werner will holler at you to inform you of his presence. You can then lure the monster towards him and use his mini-explosion device.
Werner commonly appears in the Ruins of Wyveria and Iceshard Cliffs regions as a Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds.
