Minecraft is a vast sandbox with a map so large that you might never see the borders when playing in Survival. The game does not have a minimap function, so finding places can get a bit difficult. This is where maps come into play. Using paper, you can make empty maps and fill them up to chart your surroundings. This can immensely help you know what the terrain looks like in a certain area.

Different Uses of a Cartography Table in Minecraft
After you craft a Cartography Table, there are two main uses for it. First is you can change a Villager’s profession to a Cartographer — A Cartographer can trade papers, compasses, and maps for emeralds. Second is you can upgrade your existing maps at a Cartography Table.

Function of the Zoomed-Out Map in Minecraft
The most common use of the Cartography Table is to make zoomed-out maps. A normal map has five total levels of area coverage. Every map starts at Level 0 by default and can be upgraded to Level 5 by adding papers to a map. Each time you upgrade, the area the map covers increases by 50%.
Here is the amount of block coverage for each level of the maps:
- Level 0: 128×128 blocks
- Level 1: 256×256 blocks
- Level 2: 512×512 blocks
- Level 3: 1024×1024 blocks
- Level 4: 2048×2048 blocks
