Grab your equipment because it’s time for ghost-hunting. Developed by Kinetic Games, Phasmophobia is a 4-player online co-op horror psychological game. Players need to collect evidence of paranormal activity with ghost-hunting equipment. The game has a very good collection of items, each providing a different benefit to players. However, the more items a game has, the more confusing it becomes for the players to understand what does what.

In this guide, we will explain the use of each and every item in Phasmophobia.

Starter Items

We have arranged items in an order that every player will be able to navigate. Players will learn about the starter items first. These items are used to find evidence of paranormal activities and can be bought with the money earned from ghost-hunting jobs. Here are all the items used to capture evidence:

1. Flashlight

A flashlight does not help in finding evidence, but it is used to see things. The eerie atmosphere of the game might scare the player, but a source of light gives might to the scared soul. There is a normal flashlight and a strong one to illuminate a larger area. A normal one is $30, and $50 is for the stronger kind.

2. Thermometer

A thermometer is used to check the temperature of a room. If the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius in an area, chances are there’s something fishy. Players should write down the evidence when the thermometer has a reading below 0 degrees. The cost of a thermometer is $30 and is an essential item for ghost-hunting adventures.

3. EMF Reader

This is a very important evidence-collection item. Check the house while EMF-equipped and keep an eye on the levels. It has a 1–5 level range. Level 5 means that the signal is very strong, and players should note this as evidence in their journal. An EMF reader costs $45 in-game and should be bought before the ghost-hunting shenanigans.

4. Spirit Box

Ever wanted to talk to a spirit? Well, the Spirit Box grants this wish. Players need to sit in a dark room and try to converse with the spirit. The ghost might not speak but interact with the surroundings, such as moving an object or so on. However, if the ghost speaks, players can log it as evidence in their journals. The cost of this creepy yet useful item is $50.

5. Video Camera

A video camera is an excellent evidence capture item. Place it in the paranormally active room and make sure to turn it on. Players can look at the footage in the van and try to find orbs flying around, which counts as evidence. The video camera also has night vision and costs $50 in-game.

6. UV Flashlight

A UV flashlight is used to find fingerprints and is available after some time. If there is someone’s handprint or fingerprint, this gadget will make them shine bright green. Players can collect this evidence by capturing a picture. This item is helpful in locating the ghost’s last position and costs $35.

7. Ghost Writing Book

Sometimes a ghost wants to say something but cannot speak; the ghost writing book comes in handy in this situation. Just place it on the ground by pressing ‘F,’ and the ghost might write something useful on it. Place the book near the video camera to make sure the writing is visible. Additionally, the writing is also considered evidence, and it costs $40 to buy a ghost writing book.

8. Photo Camera

A camera is used to capture various suspicious things. Players can earn money by clicking some worthy pictures, like a photo of a ghost or some other evidence. Sometimes there are optional objectives that also reward money, so make sure to look out for them. Players can buy a photo camera for $40 from the in-game shop.

9. D.O.T.S Projector

Place it on a wall or floor, and it’ll start emitting bright green lasers. If a ghost passes through, it enters a D.O.T.S state during which a faint silhouette can be seen when it passes through the laser grid. Use a video camera with night vision for better visibility. Purchase the D.O.T.S projector for $65 from the in-game shop.

Safety and Other Items

While collecting evidence is necessary, keeping yourself safe and sound is also very important. Phasmophobia has some items used to save you when the time comes. Here’s a list of all the items that might come in handy:

1. Crucifix

As the name suggests, the crucifix stops the ghost from hunting the ghost hunters. Just place it in the affected room and breathe safely. Moreover, players can throw it on the ghost in times of emergency. The cost of a crucifix is $30 and is a very good support item.

2. Candle

Players don’t use candles to be romantic with the ghost; they use them to avoid drowning in darkness. When a ghost has an activity level of 10, it affects the flashlights too. Then, players use a traditional light source to illuminate the surroundings. A candle costs $15, and a lighter is required to light it.

3. Smudge Sticks

Just like candles, smudge sticks need a lighter to make them usable. These sticks are used to sage a room temporarily. To cleanse the room, equip the smudge sticks, light them, and start cleansing by walking around the room or just throwing them by pressing ‘G.’ Smudge sticks cost $15 and can be bought from the store.

4. Sanity Pills

Hunting ghosts is not an easy task. The ghost’s presence psychologically affects the players. To keep themselves sane, players can use sanity pills. Equipping a bottle of sanity pills never hurts during a ghost-hunting adventure. They cost $45 and can be useful when playing on harder difficulty.

5. Glowstick

Just like a UV flashlight, a glowstick is used to locate fingerprints. Moreover, a glowstick is cheaper than a UV flashlight and costs $20 in-game.

6. Salt

Salt is used to protect the player from ghosts temporarily. Additionally, salt makes the ghost leave footprints that a UV flashlight can detect. Players can buy this item from the shop for $15.

7. Tripod

There are places where a camera cannot be placed directly. A tripod comes to the rescue in those situations. The camera can be placed on it for better coverage. It can be bought for $25 from the in-game shop.

8. Motion Sensor

An item used to detect motion in a room. A motion sensor is generally placed in a suspicious room to check whether there’s a ghost wandering or not. It is not essential but comes in handy sometimes. Players can buy this item for $100 from the in-game shop.

9. Sound Sensor

The sound sensor is used to detect any type of unusual sound in a room. It’s also not that useful and can be bought for $80.

10. Head-mounted Camera

Imagine a camera that does not take up space in the inventory. Players can wear a head-mounted camera on their head, and it’ll work just fine. It costs $60, and players can buy this from the in-game shop.

11. Parabolic Microphone

Just like a sound sensor, it also detects sound but also transmits the audio. As a ghost-hunting item, it is not that helpful but can be an amusing item to scare friends.

12. Infrared Light Sensor

Use the sensor to locate the ghost in a room. Whenever the ghost passes near it, the sensor will light up, alerting players.

Cursed Items

Other than starter equipment and safety items, players can also use cursed items. However, these items cannot be purchased but can be found at the location. Here are all the cursed items available in Phasmophobia:

1. Bones

You will find Bones lying at a random spot on the map. Picking one up rewards the player based on the map’s size. It acts as evidence and a bonus in Phasmophobia.

2. Haunted Mirror

It is a cursed possession that helps identify the ghost’s favorite room. However, there is a 1 in 7 chance a haunted mirror is chosen as a cursed object. It shows a part of the favorite room when activated, which helps in locating the ghost. Be careful, as the mirror can crack when used with below 20% sanity.

3. Monkey Paw

Just like the haunted mirror, the monkey paw has a 1 in 7 chance of spawning as a cursed possession. It grants a certain number of wishes to the players, but every wish comes with a negative side effect.

4. Voodoo Doll

A spooky-looking doll used to force a ghost to interact. To use a voodoo doll, just push a pin, and the ghost will interact. Players can identify these interactions with an EMF reader and UV flashlight.

5. Ouija Board

Famously known for summoning a ghost. This item is used to communicate with the ghost. Just place it in the area and ask questions via voice chat. When the ghost recognizes the question, it will move the planchette in order to answer.

6. Summoning Circle

This item is used to summon the ghost. Use a lighter to light all five candles, and as the player lights the fifth candle, the main door locks, and the ghost appears. It will stay idle for five seconds and start hunting after that, so be prepared. Collect evidence within five seconds and run away.

7. Tarot Cards

There are 10 tarot cards in a deck. Each card has a different effect on the game, such as the Death card triggering a cursed hunt and the Hanged Man card instantly killing the player. Do not draw a card during a hunt because every card will be The Fool.

8. Music Box

The music box is used to locate the ghost’s location. Once activated, the music box causes the ghost to start singing when it comes within 20 meters, revealing its location. If the music box is placed within 5 meters, a ghost event is triggered.
