Patch 8 of Baldur’s Gate 3 will bring some major changes, including a new subclass for each of the classes. For Rogues, this new subclass is Swashbuckler. Swashbucklers are a melee-focused subclass that excels in duels.

One of the many tools at their disposal is three new Dirty Tricks, moves that can quickly turn the tide of a duel. These are new features for the Swashbuckler exclusive to Baldur’s Gate 3. Here is what the Dirty Tricks can do in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Starting from level three, you can make use of three special moves called Dirty Tricks. As per their name, these are less than honourable tactics that give you an advantage in combat (both figuratively and literally).

These tricks take up a bonus action, leaving you free to use your normal action as you please. Also, they use your Charisma as the modifier for their save DC. The three tricks are as follows:

Dirty Trick – Flick o’ the Wrist

With this trick, you flick your weapon at a target and possibly disarm them. Flicking your weapon is the same as a full, regular attack and deals the same damage. To defend against being disarmed requires a DEX save against your DC. Finally, this trick also grants you an advantage on your next attack.

As you can tell, a free attack for a bonus action is strong enough on its own. However, this also has a chance of disarming your opponent, possibly wasting their turn. Alternatively, you can even take their weapon for yourself after disarming them.

The advantage this grants on your next attack is excellent for a Rogue’s Sneak Attack. Flick o’ the Wrist both shuts down your opponent’s options while opening the window for massive damage.

Dirty Trick – Sand Toss

Sand Toss allows you to throw sand in your target’s eye. This deals 1d6 bludgeoning damage at melee range and can blind your target for two turns. To avoid being blinded requires a CON save.

Blinded opponents cannot make ranged attacks except from 10 ft away and have disadvantage on all attack rolls. Also, attack rolls on blinded creatures have advantage. This, once again, has excellent synergy with Sneak Attacks. It also cripples the opponent for a full two turns, all at the cost of a bonus action.

Dirty Trick – Vicious Mockery

As the name suggests, this trick is the same as the Vicious Mockery cantrip. It deals 1d4 psychic damage, increasing to 2d4 and then 3d4 at levels five and ten, respectively. The target gets a disadvantage on its next attack roll. Avoiding this requires a WIS save.

However, this trick is even better than the cantrip for a few reasons. Firstly, it takes only a bonus action, as opposed to Vicious Mockery’s action. Secondly, it gives you an advantage on your next attack. A strictly better version of an already good cantrip that synergises well with the rest of a Rogue’s kit makes this an incredibly powerful tool.

And that is how you can use the Dirty Tricks in Baldur’s Gate 3.
