Learn about Morrigan in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and whether the iconic character is returning in the latest title, or not.
With Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s release inching ever closer, one of the biggest questions many returning fans might have is whether Morrigan is making an appearance in the latest title or not. Morrigan has been one of the most crucial characters in the Dragon Age lore and given her significance in the series’ history, she has been one of the very few characters that has reappeared in all mainline Dragon Age titles. Fortunately, for fans of the character, BioWare has confirmed that Morrigan will be making an appearance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Albeit, not in a way that most fans might be expecting.
Dragon Age games, despite following linear continuity, never hold on to a set protagonists or even characters. Save for a few handful of key characters like Solas, Varrin, and Morrigan, every new game in the franchise always features a fresh set of characters. The Veilguard is no stranger to this rule. While the Inquisitor from Dragon Age: Inquisition does make a return in The Veilguard, the story here doesn’t dwell on them for too long. Instead, it quickly shifts focus to the Rook and their Companions. However, that’s not to say all returning characters get the same treatment.
For instance, Morrigan has a more pivotal role in The Veilguard’s story compared to the Inquisitor. Although she isn’t a Companion (or a romance option) this time around, she is still a key character who plays a major role in moving the main story forward. Here’s everything you need to know about Morrigan and the role she plays in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
What Is the Role of Morrigan in Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Story?
In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Morrigan will likely be a mentor figure to the Rook and his Companions. While the Witch of the West has had a more active role in the past games, most notably in Dragon Age: Origins, that’s not the case in The Veilguard. Given Morrigan’s character arc was more or less resolved in Dragon Age 2, and Inquisition, there’s very little to be told from her perspective. It’s also a possibility that Morrigan might have her own plans for pursuing the dark forces beyond the Veil. As such, she might be someone who comes looking for the Rook’s aid.
Given The Veilguard only allows you to carry over just three choices from the past Dragon Age games, it’s unclear how involved Morrigan would be in the Rook’s story. However, given the character’s past and motivations, she’s likely going to be an ally to the Rook and will be aiding them against the crisis unleashed on Thedas.
Can You Romance Morrigan in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
Unfortunately, for fans of Morrigan, Dragon Age: The Veilguard continues the trend of games where you cannot romance Morrigan. Morrigan was one of the key characters who was also present as a romance option in Dragon Age: Origins. However, in the series’ later entries, i.e., Dragon Age: Inquisition and now The Veilguard, she’s relegated to the role of a side character. Similar to Dragon Age: Inquisition, Morrigan won’t be present as a playable character either in The Veilguard, although that’s by design.
In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, none of the Companions are “playable.” Instead, the Rook can only issue commands to said Companions during combat, akin to how the Companions system works in the Mass Effect games.
