Learning how to make a map in Minecraft is important, especially in the later stages of the game when you need to explore the farther reaches of your world. The open-world sandbox title features an expansive world that seemingly does not end. This means there is plenty to explore and discover.
However, this also means you can easily get lost if you are no longer familiar with the locations you reach. While the game does not have a minimap, unless you install mods, you can craft a map so you can check where exactly you are in the world.

How To Craft a Map in Minecraft Java Edition
The crafting recipe needed to make a map in Minecraft Java Edition is as follows:
- Compass x1
- Paper x8
You need to place the Compass at the center of the crafting table and surround it with paper to craft an “empty map.” Once you craft your map, place it in one of your hands to start marking the area. You may need multiple maps if you want to cover more ground.
How To Craft a Map in Minecraft Bedrock Edition
Unlike the Java Edition, there are two types of maps that you can craft in the Bedrock Edition. The first one is the “empty map” that only shows an overview of the location without a player marker. The second one is the “empty locator map” that shows both terrain and location markers for the player.
You can craft the regular map in Minecraft Bedrock Edition by filling the entire crafting table with paper. As for the locator map, you need to place one Compass at the center of the crafting table and surround it with 8 pieces of paper.
Where To Get a Recipe for a Map in Minecraft
You can get the crafting recipe to craft a map in Minecraft in multiple ways:
Compass
You can craft a compass by placing a Redstone Dust at the center of the Crafting Table and placing iron ingots in each cardinal direction. You can get iron ingots from smelting iron chunks in a furnace. Redstone Dust can be mined underground. Armorer and Cleric Villagers may also trade these items for other resources like emeralds.
Paper
Paper in Minecraft can be crafted by placing three sugar canes in a horizontal line on the crafting table. You should get three pieces of paper from this. Sugar canes can spawn in the wild, usually near bodies of water like seashores, beaches, ponds, and swamps. You can also grow sugar canes on your own by placing them on sand, dirt, or mud beside a block of water. Paper can also be sold by Cartographers.
