Here is how you can get Calliben’s Grim Retort along with other useful equipment in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.

The Calliben’s Grim Retort is one of the weapons in The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered that can help you get by in the early game. This weapon is an Elven Mace that has Absorb Strength, Absorb Blunt, and Frost Damage enchantments. It’s a fairly decent weapon that you can use while grinding for better gear in the game.
You can only get this mace during or after completing the Unfriendly Competition quest. It’s a fairly long quest and mostly requires stealth. However, the rewards are worth it, especially if you are just starting out on your adventure. Here is a guide on how you can complete the Unfriendly Competition quest in Oblivion Remastered and get Calliben’s Grim Retort along the way.

How To Complete the Unfriendly Competition Quest in Oblivion Remastered

Before you can get your hands on Calliben’s Grim Retort mace, you first need to go through the Unfriendly Competition quest.
Speak to Merchants
To start this quest, you need to speak to three merchants in the Market District of Imperial City. Here are their locations:
- Tertullian Verus – Three Brothers Trade Goods
- Claudette Perrick – The Gilded Carafe
- Ogier Georick – The Main Ingredient
Interacting with these merchants will lead to Jensine’s Good as New Merchandise in the Market District. Interact with Jensine and talk about Thoronir. You will then have the option to aid the investigation.

Eavesdrop on Thoronir’s Conversation

Jensine will ask you to speak with Thoronir in The Copious Coinpurse. Select the inventory option in his dialogue menu and leave his store. You won’t get any reaction from Thoronit just yet. You then need to wait until 11 PM or skip the in-game time.
Once nighttime falls, you need to tail Thoronir without being detected. You can unequip your gear to increase your stealth, as you won’t be initiating combat. He will lead you to a stone fountain where you will get a cutscene where Thoronir is has a conversation with Agarmir.

Follow Agarmir to His Home
Once you are done eavesdropping, a new task will start. You will need to follow Agarmir to his house without being detected. The stealth mission will lead you to a house in the Talos Plaza District. You must first wait for Agarmir to leave his house again before you can infiltrate it.
Here is a list of times when he will leave the house:
- Sundas: 8 AM – 8 PM
- Morndas: 4 PM – 8 PM
- Tirdas: 4 PM – 8 PM
- Middas: 4 PM – 8 PM
- Turdas: 4 PM – 8 PM
- Fredas: 5 PM – 7 PM
- Loredas: 8 AM – 8 PM
Once the coast is clear, get inside the house by using a lockpick. Make your way to the basement to find a book titled Macabre Manifest. You’ll discover how Agarmir is digging up graves and selling them for profit. Take this book to Thoronir, and he will help you with your plan to catch Agarmir and stop him from taking more graves to sell.
The final part of the quest is also where you can get a few useful items like Calliben’s Grim Retort and Debaser. On top of that, completing the quest will net you even more rewards, including a decent cum of gold.

Thoronir will point you towards the Trentius Family Mausoleum in the Green Emperor Way. Head inside, and you will encounter Agarmir. He is expecting you and has set up an ambush as a welcome gift.
Defeat the enemies, including Agarmir, and you can loot the enchanted sword Debaser from his corpse. This weapon can drain both Willpower and Endurance from enemy targets hit. Afterward, you need to do a bit of exploring inside the mausoleum to find Calliben’s Grim Retort mace.
That’s not all the rewards you can get. After looting the place, you can pick up the Muddy Shovel, then take the Trentius Family Mausoleum from Agarmir. You can then interact with Thornir to complete the quest and receive the Weathered Circlet as a reward. This head jewelry grants Resist Fire and Resist Frost enchantments. Finally, head back to Jensine to receive your gold reward.
