Starting the Necromancer’s Moon Quest in Oblivion Remastered

Before you start the Necromancer’s Moon quest, you first have to complete these three quests in the Mage’s Guild:

  • A Mage’s Staff
  • Ulterior Motives
  • Vahtacen’s Secret

If you have completed all these quests, go and talk to Raminus Polus to initiate the quest. After the conversation, head to the Mystic Library and talk to Tar-Meena, and ask her about Black Soul Gems. She will suggest you take a look at the Necromancer’s Moon book. The book should be on a table by the door on the western side of the library. Read the book and talk to Tar-Meena.

Take the book and exit the library. Make your way back to Raminus Polus, who will be talking to Bothiel. Do not interrupt the conversation between them, as it leads to a bug that doesn’t allow you to talk to Raminus. If this glitch occurs to you, simply leave the room and come back in. After you talk to Raminus Polus, he will send you to talk to Bothiel about this.

Bothiel gives you a crumbled note and leaves in a hurry. You have to talk to Raminus Polus again to get your main objective. This time, you have to leave and deal with the necromancers yourself. Depending on your unlocked fast travel locations, you can choose the Dark Fissure Cave in any of these three locations:

  • Fort Istirius
  • Fort Linchal
  • Wendelbek

The rituals happen every eight days and last for a whole day. For example, starting from the 1st day, the ritual occurs on the 9th, then the 17th, and so on. After visiting one of these three locations, you have two choices:

  • Steal a note from the Worm Anchorite.
  • Finish the ritual by yourself.

Here’s what happens for each of the choices.

Finish the Ritual by Yourself

This is the simplest method through which you can complete this quest. All you have to do is stand outside the cave. You can see a purple light with thunder crackling around the cave. During the ritual, you can kill the Worm Anchorite and complete the ritual yourself by casting Soul Trap on the Grand Soul Gem.

Steal a Note from the Worm Anchorite

You can also choose to enter the Dark Fissure Cave and seek out the Worm Anchorite if you do not wish to wait around. This is not recommended due to the number of Necromancers you have to fight on your way in. If you manage to kill the Worm Anchorite, steal a note off his body, and exit the cave.

Once you are out, go and talk to Raminus Polus and tell him what you did. Doing so lets you advance to the position of a Magician rank. With the Magician rank, you can get tasks directly from the Archmage Tavern.
