‘Stendarr’s Mercy’ is the quest to retrieve the Gauntlets of the Crusader as a part of the Knights of the Nine storyline. It requires selflessness and sacrifice from the player in the face of a curse that haunts a knight’s bloodline. You will need to complete the mission and obtain the Gauntlets of the Crusader to progress the main Knights of the Nine quest.

‘Stendarr’s Mercy’ begins following the ‘Priory of the Nine’ quest. Speak with Sir Casimir, and he will narrate the story of his curse and the Gauntlets of the Crusader. When he was alive, Sir Casimir succeeded in obtaining the Gauntlets of the Crusader, but the War of the Red Diamond left him devoid of compassion. Upon being pestered by a beggar one too many times, he struck down the poor wretch and killed him on the spot within the Chapel of Stendarr.

For his sin, Sir Casimir was cursed with a debilitating weakness, and the Gauntlets of the Crusader fell out of his hands onto the chapel’s floor. The relic gauntlets cannot be moved and have remained in the Chapel of Stendarr. Much to the dismay of his descendants, Sir Casimir’s curse was passed down the family tree and currently plagues Kellen, a Redguard man from Hammerfell.

Chapel of Stendarr

Head to Chorrol’s chapel and interact with the Gauntlets of the Crusader lying on the north end of the main hall. You will find that they are too heavy to pick up. Speak with Areldur, one of the priests in the chapel, to gather more information. He will reveal the existence of Sir Casimir’s descendant, Kellen, and point you to his location within the chapel.

Lift the Curse

Lift the curse on Kellen to claim the Gauntlets of the Crusader. Head into the Chapel Hall and enter the first bedroom on the right to find Kellen on the bed. Because of the curse, Kellen is the only one who can move the Gauntlets of the Crusader. But he wants to rid himself of it and suggests that you probe Areldur about how to lift it.

Return to Areldur, and he reveals that only someone willing to take the curse upon themselves can lift it from Kellen. Here is what you need to do to lift the curse and receive the gauntlets:

  • Pray at the Altar of the Nine and choose the option to accept the curse.
  • Equip the Lay Hands spell from your Magic spells page.
  • Use the Lay Hands spell on Kellen.
  • Pick up the Gauntlets of the Crusader.

By using Lay Hands on Kellen, you free him from the curse and take it upon yourself. It passively damages Fatigue by 5 points, and appears in the Active Effects page as the Curse of the Consumed. You can remove the curse by continuing the Knights of the Nine questline and receiving the Blessing of Talos.
